About the Job 


The Better Cotton Initiative, the world’s leading cotton sustainability initiative, has over 2,500 members and approximately 13,000 non-member suppliers interacting with the Better Cotton Platform (BCP). To safeguard the credibility of the initiative and manage reputational and regulatory risk, we operate a Member Monitoring Protocol and compliance process aligned to our Code of Practice. 

To date, monitoring activities have focused on Members only and rely significantly on manual processes. As membership numbers grow and external scrutiny intensifies - driven by emerging corporate due diligence legislation and heightened stakeholder expectations  we have reassessed the scope, scalability, and risk prioritisation of the monitoring programme and are implementing a new revised monitoring and due diligence model. 


The Monitoring Sr Coordinator will oversee the implementation of the new monitoring approach to ensure consistent and thorough implementation working closely with the Monitoring Officer on approval processes, technology and automation adoption, and consistent implementation of escalation processes among other key priorities.


The Challenge


Looking ahead to 2030, we are targeting reducing GHG emissions from cotton production by half, big cuts in synthetic pesticide use, improve soil health across our network, improve farm income and support women’s empowerment among farmers and farm workers. 


Responsibilities


In this role, you will be responsible for :


New application approvals: Oversee implementation of our revised monitoring and due diligence model for new Members and BCP Suppliers to support in safeguarding the credibility of BCI, managing reputational risk, and upholding our organisational values. 

  • Manage new Better Cotton Platform access requests and ensure that any additional compliance requirements depending on risk categorisation.
  • Own and maintain membership and BCP terms documentation such as Terms of Membership, Code of Practice, Monitoring Protocol, Member Fee Structure, BCP Access Terms and Conditions seeking guidance from internal and external legal counsel as required
  • Manage the member application approval process ensuring all prospective member applications are evaluated against our criteria and recommendations for approval of new members are submitted on a regular and time basis to the CEO and COO.


Escalation process for potential breaches of our membership and BCP terms: Oversee the investigation and escalation process when potential breaches of our terms are identified by either Members or BCP Suppliers.

  • Gather additional information as necessary which may include social compliance audit availability, status and score; full audit reports; evidence of commitment to good environmental and social standards; and annual audited report or financial results. 
  • Present case information in a timely manner to relevant Demand & Engagement management and leadership as well as the Head of Function when applicable for timely decision making as outlined with the Member Monitoring Protocol. 


Risk and compliance platforms: Roll out and manage a new facility risk and compliance technology platform to strengthen BCI’s visibility of facility-level risk exposure

  • Identify, explore, and implement integration opportunities with existing social compliance programmes to limit the manual exchange of information where possible.
  • Advise on data integration/automation needs between business-critical systems such as the BCP and Salesforce to enable central data reporting/records and publishing in the member portal where applicable as new requirements arise, working closely with the function owners and the IT Team. 


Member Complaint Management and BCI Risk Register: Serve as the focal point for member complaints and reporting function risks to the BCI Risk Register to support a positive member experience and ensure that the function strategy accommodates for the most salient risks.

  • Own the complaints resolution process for Demand& Engagement, acting as functional focal point.


Experience

Education & Experience:

  • University degree, or higher education qualification, in compliance or law, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring, ESG compliance, or related activities in the textile industry or a sector where skills are transferable.
  • Experience working in international, multicultural, or mission-driven environments is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate with Leadership as well as other stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Efficient organisation of administrative work, strong process orientation and project management skills.
  • Strong ability to enforce good project governance and drive delivery excellence.
  • Fluency in English is required, additional languages a plus.

Working arrangements


The position is full-time (40 hours per week) and will be based in London. Better Cotton Initiative offers flexible working, with core hours being 10 am – 4 pm.  The position may require limited international travel.
