Capitol Engineering Co.

Quality Control Assistant - Metal Fabrication

Capitol Engineering is an established and expanding custom fabrication company delivering high quality engineered & fabricated steel products to a wide variety of industries including mining, agriculture, and general industrial applications. Capitol Engineering was established in 1937 and we are currently growing at a rapid pace and are looking to add a Quality Control Assistant to our team.

This position requires an experienced and detail-focused individual that wants to be part of a growing team. The ideal candidate will have a keen eye for detail, strong analytical skills, and a proactive approach to problem solving.

What You'll Do

  • Perform in-process and final visual weld inspections on fabricated assemblies per AWS D1.1 and applicable WPS requirements
  • Evaluate welds for common deficiencies — undercut, porosity, incomplete fusion, incorrect weld size, dimensional non-conformances — and communicate findings directly and constructively to welders
  • Verify fitup, joint prep, and material identification prior to and during welding
  • Review shop drawings and work orders to confirm dimensional and weld callout compliance; verify current revision documents are in use
  • Initiate and complete Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) with objective evidence; ensure non-conforming work is identified and controlled
  • Assist with NDE coordination and documentation (MT, PT, UT) as directed
  • Maintain inspection records, welder qualification logs, and other QMS documentation in accordance with Capitol's quality system
  • Support internal audit preparation and AISC audit readiness activities

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in welding, fabrication, or quality inspection in a manufacturing or structural steel environment
  • Demonstrated ability to visually assess weld quality and identify common weld defects
  • Working knowledge of weld symbols, joint types, and shop drawing interpretation
  • Familiarity with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and the ability to verify weld parameters against documented procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate, organized inspection records
  • Clear, professional communication skills — you'll be delivering findings and corrective requirements directly to welders on the floor

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with AWS D1.1 visual inspection acceptance criteria
  • AWS CWI credential, or active progress toward it (support for obtaining this certification may be available)
  • Experience with NDE methods (MT, PT, UT) in a fabrication or industrial setting
  • Prior experience in an AISC-certified or similarly audited fabrication environment
  • Proficiency with fillet weld gauges, calipers, and basic inspection tooling

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site position working Monday through Friday in an active fabrication shop. Some weekends may be required. Work involves regular time on the shop floor in a production environment with noise, welding fumes, heat, and heavy equipment. PPE is required throughout shop floor activities.
