Senior Director of Technical Assistance

The Environmental Protection Network (EPN) was founded in January 2017 and now has over 750 EPA alumni across the country volunteering their time to protect the integrity of EPA, human health, and the environment. We harness the expertise of former EPA career staff and confirmation-level appointees from Democratic and Republican administrations to provide the unique perspective of former regulators with decades of historical knowledge and subject matter expertise.

We are focused on building and defending the capacity of environmental agencies and the communities they serve to truly address the most urgent health and environmental crises.


Priority Deadline: June 10th, 2026


Work will be predominantly remote, as EPN does not have an office. There will be some in-person meetings in other locations in the United States. We are looking for someone to start this position immediately.


About The Position:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Technical Assistance leads a Technical Assistance Team of (up to) 11 staff members, including managers, senior associates, and associates of Community Outreach. This leader serves as a trusted advisor to and a member of EPN's senior leadership team. They will leverage exemplary team management skills combined with environmental justice and/or social justice expertise to meet the evolving needs of a robust team. The core focus of this role is to create an inclusive culture by establishing operational systems and structures to manage the execution of 11+ staff members. 


Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership + Vision
    • Drives a comprehensive national Technical Assistance strategy
    • Serves as a member of the executive leadership team to advance the mission of EPN through our critical Technical Assistance work
  • Team Management 
    • Manages the Technical Assistance team of 11 full-time remote staff members
      • Ongoing check-ins
      • Formal Performance Management (twice annually)
      • Ongoing Coaching and Development 
    • Supports team-wide meetings and spaces 
    • Develops an annual strategic operational plan for Technical Assistance at EPN (inclusive of systems to track and monitor priorities, goals, and metrics across the team)
    • Identifies and delegates special projects to senior associates and managers as relevant 
    • Monitors and supports managers of technical assistance with staff hiring, onboarding, and training
    • Supports the team through changes in expectations, structure, or protocol when necessary
  • Technical Assistance
    • Manages the daily operations of the Technical Assistance team, including 11 full-time remote staff members
    • Manages Technical Assistance contracts 
    • Leads continuous improvement for Technical Assistance at EPN, including systematizing internal communication, volunteer management, database management, and utilization, etc. 
    • Leads database collaboration 
    • Supports key external coalitions/relationships across our Technical Assistance work 
    • Represents EPN at conferences and events 

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to Environmental Protection Network’s mission and values
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Progressive experience in the environmental justice/energy justice/social justice sector
  • Minimum of 10 years in a leadership role, managing teams, and at least 5 years of directly managing staff
  • Exceptional people management skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment 
  • Experience working with an executive leadership team
  • Experience with leading and guiding teams through change 
  • Experience overseeing contracted services 
  • A strategic and systems-thinking approach
  • Excellent communication and relational skills to lead and develop diverse teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experience with Canva and/or other presentation tools 
  • Familiarity with Google Docs Editors Suite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.)
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish a plus

Managing Execution: This Senior Director of Technical Assistance drives disciplined execution of strategic priorities by translating plans into clear actions, milestones, and measurable outcomes for the team. Closely monitors progress, proactively addresses risks, and adjusts resources to keep initiatives on track. Ensures accountability and follow-through, consistently delivering results aligned with organizational objectives.

Team Management/Coaching & Developing Others: The Senior Director of Technical Assistance consistently leads a team of 11 with clarity, accountability, and a strong focus on results, creating an environment where expectations are well understood, performance is actively managed, and team members receive timely and relevant feedback. Invests in individual development through coaching and aligning team members’ strengths with organizational goals to maximize impact. Fosters collaboration and trust, enabling the team to deliver high-quality outcomes while continuously improving capabilities.


Pay:

  • An annual salary of $174,150 based in Washington, D.C. We will adjust the salary up or down based on locality.

Work-Life Balance:

  • Employees are encouraged to balance a 40-hour work week with a flexible work schedule and core hours of 11 AM-4 PM ET 
  • 11 paid Federal Holidays and other paid days when the office is closed, including: 
    • The work day before or after July 4 
    • The day before and after Thanksgiving
    • The week of December 25th and the week of Jan 1st (FY26-Dec 21st-Jan 1st, FY27- December 20th-December 31st)
  • Organization-wide non-meeting days on all major holidays that fall outside of the federal calendar (our staff can submit these to our calendar based on religious or cultural holidays)
  • 3 weeks (120 hours) of paid time off (inclusive of sick, personal days, and vacation)
  • 5 days of annual disaster relief time off in the event of a natural disaster impacting you or your family (does not carry over or pay out upon exit)
  • 5 days of annual bereavement (does not carry over or pay out upon exit)
  • 3 annual “EPN” days to be used for any purpose across the year (does not carry over or pay out upon exit)
