Senior Manager, First Party Medical

The Opportunity


As a Senior Manager - First Party Medical, you will be responsible for the results of multiple teams handling first-party medical claims across numerous different jurisdictions. These teams are remote, and your role will require occasional travel. This role is vital to Root’s success as we continue to grow the scale and scope of our Claims team.


Salary Range:  $115,000 - $125,000

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.


How You Will Make an Impact


  • Lead multiple teams within the First-Party Medical Unit in the claims organization
  • Establish processes to drive technical claim handling, resulting in best-in-class loss performance while maintaining high customer satisfaction
  • Drive pace in a scalable manner, resulting in best-in-class LAE while maintaining high employee satisfaction
  • Understand and leverage analytics, process automation, and technology to improve efficiency and quality within claims operations
  • Drive process innovation with a high degree of discernment between true differentiators and superficial features
  • Create and execute talent development strategies for claims personnel, while recognizing the outsized impact that people have on the performance of the organization
  • Provide leadership across geographically dispersed teams, with remote employees across the country
  • Rely on data to take a highly quantitative approach to claims handling, while also valuing qualitative feedback from customers and employees
  • Measure, evaluate and communicate individual and team performance results in relation to overall organizational objectives


What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Continuous learning demonstrated by advanced certifications, industry specialization and/or claims programs
  • 5+ years of successful experience leading employees who complete first party medical claim adjudication -  including complex investigations that causation and billing issues with attorneys
  • Root first party medical experience preferred
  • Strong technical understanding of policy interpretation
  • Experience managing complex first party claims that involved litigation 
  • Ability to build collaborative working relationships
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively 
  • High sense of professionalism while remaining empathetic
  • Familiarity with claims best practices required
  • Curious in nature
  • Great attention to detail
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work
  • Ability to handle ambiguity and quickly adapt when changes occur
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to approach problems with an open mind
  • Previous experience handling Florida and New York PIP claims preferred
  • Ability to obtain and maintain insurance licenses in several states (including Texas) within three months
