About the role

RNWBL is seeking an experienced Lead Wind Turbine Technician with demonstrated Vestas Major Component Exchange (MCE) experience to lead field crews performing complex turbine repairs and component replacements throughout North America.

This position is specifically focused on Vestas turbine platforms and requires hands-on experience leading gearbox, generator, blade, hub, and pitch bearing exchanges. The successful candidate will serve as the on-site crew leader responsible for safety, execution, planning, quality, customer communication, and project delivery.

This is a travel-based role requiring extended project assignments and approximately 90% domestic travel.

Important Applicant Requirement

This position is exclusively for candidates with hands-on Vestas wind turbine experience.

Applicants must have demonstrated experience performing and leading Major Component Exchange activities on Vestas turbine platforms. Candidates without Vestas MCE experience will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead crews performing major component exchanges on Vestas wind turbine platforms.
  • Direct the removal and installation of gearboxes, generators, blades, hubs, pitch bearings, and other major turbine components.
  • Serve as the on-site lead for daily work execution, crew coordination, and safety oversight.
  • Execute and oversee crane operations, heavy rigging activities, generator alignments, and complex lifting operations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, LOTO procedures, OEM requirements, and RNWBL safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve advanced mechanical, hydraulic, and drivetrain-related issues.
  • Coordinate work activities with site leadership, customers, crane providers, and RNWBL Operations.
  • Train, coach, and mentor Wind Turbine Technicians and MCE team members.
  • Maintain project documentation, inspection records, and closeout reporting requirements.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained and available for execution.
  • Identify and proactively mitigate safety, quality, and schedule risks.
  • Represent RNWBL professionally while fostering a positive and high-performing team environment.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 4 years of wind turbine maintenance experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading Major Component Exchange crews on Vestas wind turbine platforms.
  • Hands-on experience performing Vestas gearbox, generator, blade, hub, and pitch bearing exchanges.
  • Advanced knowledge of Vestas turbine mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, drivetrain components, and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Proven leadership experience as a Lead Technician, Crew Lead, Foreman, or equivalent field leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, LOTO procedures, rigging practices, and safe work standards.
  • Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel extensively, including assignments lasting 4–6 weeks at a time.
  • Ability to support approximately 90% domestic travel requirements.

Preferred

  • Technical school, military, or trade-related training.
  • Current GWO certifications.
  • CDL-A with air brake endorsement or willingness to obtain.
  • Passport for international project support.
  • Advanced rigging, crane signaling, or lifting certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb wind turbines and work at heights exceeding 300 feet.
  • Must meet applicable OSHA and site-specific weight requirements.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a repetitive basis.
  • Ability to signal and rig loads up to 100 tons.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated environments.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, crawl, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
  • Ability to work rotating schedules, overtime, and extended project assignments.
  • Ability to work safely in all weather conditions.
