Junior Full Stack Software Engineer, IT
About Urban Sky
Urban Sky is a venture-backed aerospace startup on a mission to pioneer humanity’s routine, easy access to the stratosphere and the value locked within it. We design, build, operate, and sell stratospheric balloon systems. The data we collect supports a wide range of applications, from real-time wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. Our technology is also employed by government customers including the Department of War (DoW), NASA, and others. Urban Sky sends flight vehicles to the stratosphere on a weekly basis.
Our team consists of engineers, makers, developers, and doers who believe in the power of human potential when passion meets utility within a small, supportive team. At Urban Sky we strive to create a team culture grounded in candor, inclusion, respect and empowerment.
We aim to build the next chapter of stratospheric history in Denver and Texas and are seeking self-starting, open-minded, and hard-working team members.
About the role
This is a junior software engineering seat on Urban Sky's IT team. Most of the day is IT operations work: supporting employees, running the ticket queue, onboarding and offboarding, administering Microsoft 365, imaging devices, implementing CMMC 2.0 and NIST 800-171 controls. Alongside that, you will write the automations, scripts, dashboards, and internal tools that let a small IT team support an aerospace company launching to the stratosphere every day. The more you automate, the more of your time goes to engineering.
IT works with every team in the company, from firmware engineers and mission control to atmospheric scientists and the manufacturing floor. You will know the whole company inside six months.
We expect this role to change as you do. Plan on one to three years of getting good at the work and learning how the company runs. After that, you can take on more of the internal tools and automation, or move to another engineering team such as flight software, mission control, data pipelines, or embedded firmware.
Day One Responsibilities
- Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 IT support for employees, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues across a mixed Windows and macOS fleet
- Own the daily ticket queue
- Run employee onboarding and offboarding: device setup, account provisioning, access management, device recovery
- Administer Microsoft 365: identity, licensing, mailboxes, SharePoint, Teams
- Track, tag, and reconcile IT assets, including spares
- Learn the compliance frameworks Urban Sky operates under (CMMC 2.0, NIST 800-171) and contribute to control implementation and evidence collection
- Begin writing the automations, scripts, and internal tools that scale the IT team: onboarding workflows, access provisioning, M365 scripting, asset tracking
- Document procedures, fixes, and known issues so what the team knows is written down and doesn't depend on any one person
Responsibilities You Will Develop Into
- Taking increasing ownership of the internal web apps and automations that run employee onboarding, access management, and compliance evidence collection
- Building and extending the dashboards and reporting that give the business visibility into IT, access, and compliance state
- Scripting CMMC 2.0 and NIST 800-171 evidence collection so compliance keeps up as the company grows without adding people
- Helping secure Urban Sky's production AI agent deployments
- Participating in the broader Software Engineering organization's cross-team tooling and APIs
- Moving into a specialized engineering seat elsewhere in the company as you find the work that fits you
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated engineering ability
- 0 to 2 years of professional experience. This is explicitly a junior role.
- Scripting experience in any language (PowerShell, Python, Bash, or similar), and comfort writing against APIs
- Able to troubleshoot hardware, software, and connectivity problems step by step and explain how you found the fix
- Fundamentals in operating systems, networking, and identity
- Comfort in both Windows and macOS environments
- Hands-on, self-directing, able to own a problem from report to shipped fix without being told the steps
- Clear written communication. You will write code, documentation, runbooks, and compliance artifacts that have to hold up when someone else reads them a year from now.
- Comfortable starting in a role that is mostly IT operations, with the engineering work growing over time
Nice-to-Haves / Preferred Skills
- Internship, co-op, or project experience in software engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, IT, or security
- Exposure to Microsoft 365 administration or scripting against the Graph API
- Working fluency in a modern language and framework (TypeScript / Node / React, Python, Go, or similar)
- Familiarity with security frameworks such as CMMC 2.0, NIST 800-171, SOC 2, or ISO 27001
- Interest in AI tools, agentic workflows, and the engineering practices that make them safe to deploy
- Security-related certifications (Security+, Network+, or equivalent)
- Prior experience in a startup, aerospace, defense, or any environment where you had to learn fast and ship
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen or equivalent work authorization (Permanent Resident or otherwise eligible to access controlled US Government information).
- Must be located near Denver, CO or willing to relocate. This role is on-site at our office at 4800 Race St., Denver, CO.
Benefits
- Stock Options
