Head of Hardware

Who We Are

At Framework, we believe the time has come for products that are designed to last. Founded in San Francisco in 2020, our mission is to remake Consumer Electronics to respect people and the planet.

We've started with two award-winning products, the Framework Laptop 13 and 16. Our laptops are thin, light, high-performance notebooks that can be upgraded, customized, and repaired in ways that no other notebook can. Alongside this, we've launched the Framework Marketplace to enable an ecosystem of parts and modules.

In 2025, we added two new products to our lineup: The Framework Laptop 12, a 2-in-1 convertible with a 12.2" touchscreen and stylus support, and our first non-laptop product, the highly customizable and powerful Framework Desktop, a compact system for gamers and ML enthusiasts.

We've seen a fantastic reception to both of our laptops from customers and reviewers from outlets like Linus Tech Tips, Ars Technica, and multiple Wirecutter reviews (including a recommendation among the best Windows Ultrabooks of 2024), along with making TIME's Best Inventions lists in 2021 and 2023. As a company, we were #35 on Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies of 2022.

We come from successful consumer electronics startups including the founding team of Oculus, and have closed multiple rounds of funding to fuel our roadmap. Even better (and maybe unusually for an early stage startup), we're in a financially healthy position going forward off of our product revenue. We care deeply about building a diverse and inclusive team, and we hope you do too!

The Position

Over the last 5 years, we’ve scaled from one group of engineers building a single product, Framework Laptop 13, to now four groups building four product lines in parallel. We’re now looking for an amazing hardware leader to help us continue to grow our product categories and our hardware team to achieve our mission.

As Head of Hardware, you’ll lead and grow the 20+ person hardware organization, spanning electrical, mechanical, firmware/software, and program management. We operate in a highly leveraged model (meaning our suppliers’ engineering teams are larger than ours on each program), so you’ll also be managing outwards and building strong relationships with our partners.

You’ll own strategy and execution, taking on responsibility for scaling our processes and engineering culture, investing in our technology pipeline, and managing and mentoring both new and experienced managers. You’ll be hands-on, holding a high bar of engineering quality, while also setting long term direction.

We’re a remote-first company, but for this role, our preference is a hybrid working-mode from either our San Francisco headquarters or our Taipei branch office. In either scenario, we would expect 10-20% domestic and international travel throughout the year to our offices and to our key partners.

What You'll Do

  • Prepare our processes and engineering culture for further scale, including advancing our NPI process, setting standards for design reviews, and improving our internal software tooling
  • Partner with our ID, operations, marketing, and other teams to align phase gates and deliver world-class consumer products
  • Manage and mentor the managers across each functional team in our hardware organization
  • Direct the engineering teams at our suppliers, building a collaborative joint development model on complex products to improve quality and make product excellence repeatable
  • Set and hold a high bar of performance and quality of engineering

What You Need

  • Proven experience leading and growing multi-functional hardware engineering organizations building complex consumer products
  • Familiarity and interest in building hardware in a highly leveraged JDM working model
  • Expertise building distributed team processes that scale across countries and time zones
  • Familiarity with building new products from a blank slate on efficient execution timelines
  • A desire to be hands on and understand both the details of electrical, mechanical, and software implementation and the big picture of the product
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and growing engineering managers

What's Nice to Have

  • Fluency in Mandarin
  • Previous experience in a consumer electronics startup
  • Familiarity with repair, open source hardware and software, and reducing the environmental impact of hardware products
  • Working history with tier 1 ODMs for PCs
  • A background in one or more of electrical, mechanical, or software engineering

What You'll Love

  • Competitive salary, equity, and health benefits
  • Paid company holidays plus 20 PTO days per year
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Flexible work hours and locations, including every other Friday off!
  • 401K with matching for US employees
  • The chance to work at a startup that is making a positive social and environmental impact
