School Cleaner P/T (West Hempstead)

The School Cleaner will be responsible for cleaning and securing the school building daily while proactively identifying and solving facilities related issues to ensure a safe and fun environment. This position is located at Gersh Autism Academy location in West Hempstead, NY!


***Please note, this is a part-time position. M-F from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the cleaning and maintenance of the building.
  • Complete daily cleaning checklists for each assigned room and follow established deep-cleaning schedules.
  • Notify management of the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Secure the building daily by shutting off lights and conducting a walk-through of the entire building to ensure all windows and doors are closed and secured at the end of the shift.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Follow procedures for the use of floor-cleaning equipment and products to maintain flooring and prevent damage.
  • Perform basic electrical, plumbing, and handyman repairs, including painting, replacing light bulbs, assembling and repairing furniture, and completing light carpentry.
  • Monitor inventory levels of maintenance materials and supplies.
  • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Coordinate classroom and building moves that require moving heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established health and safety standards.
  • Report all health and safety hazards to management.
  • Work with minimal direct supervision and operate effectively as part of a team.
  • Clear walkways, steps, and surrounding areas during inclement weather.
  • Spread rock salt, sand, or other appropriate materials to help ensure staff and student safety.
  • Perform snow removal as needed.
  • Assist with event setup and breakdown, including arranging or removing decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, scaffolding, and other materials for events, banquets, or meetings.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with employees, contractors, and vendors.
  • Pivot priorities quickly and respond effectively to interruptions throughout the day.
  • Remain on one’s feet for extended periods.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of custodial, janitorial, or cleaning experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.


Working Conditions

  • Primary location: West Hempstead, NY.
  • May be required to visit or support other Gersh locations.
  • Must be able to work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
  • Monday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with some schedule variation.
  • This position will serve as a key holder.
  • Occasional work before or after regular school hours may be required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to keep students safe from themselves and others and, in some cases, may need to implement CPI procedures, including therapeutic holds.
  • Must be able to remove oneself from potentially harmful situations and, in some cases, lift a child.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift at least 50–65 pounds and assist and/or physically support students, which may include lifting or guiding students of varying sizes.
  • Ability to physically intervene when required to ensure safety, in accordance with CPI training.
  • Ability to quickly remove oneself and/or others from unsafe situations.
  • Ability to maintain attention and focus in a dynamic, high-stimulation environment.
  • Ability to multitask and shift priorities quickly.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions, particularly in high-pressure or safety-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to perform duties under stress, including during behavioral escalations.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to move freely throughout the building without restrictions.

 


The pay range for this role is:

19 - 19 USD per hour (West Hempstead)
