Position Summary:
ICL Academy is an independent, virtual, passion-based school serving students in grades 5-12. We are seeking five talented and motivated Academic Department Chairs for the following areas: English, Math, Science, Social Studies & Fine Arts, and World Languages & Electives to join our team. These positions play a pivotal role in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment, ensuring that students have access to the resources and services they need to succeed during their academic experience as ICL students. These positions are essential in facilitating a positive and powerful educational experience for our diverse student body and supporting the school's commitment to personalized support and academic excellence. These individuals are experienced thought leaders in virtual teaching and learning.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership and Programming (15%)
- Create and deliver a powerful vision and culture for the academic department of oversight.
- Oversee, supervise, and support the teachers within the academic department of oversight, to include academic department meetings, teacher professional development, and the teacher observation process.
- Support the teacher hiring and retention process, to include interviewing, hiring, professional development, planning, assigning, directing work, and responding to and resolving concerns.
- Support the delivery of live teacher and student orientations and other initiatives.
- Develop & deliver relevant student-focused workshops on various topics, such as skills development, technology orientation, and finding success in a virtual academic environment.
- Engage in event participation and student engagement efforts to support student acquisition and retention.
- Respond & address student and teacher questions/concerns and escalate to the Head of School as appropriate.
- Uphold the academic integrity policy & respond to & address student academic integrity concerns.
- Support the accreditation process in partnership with the Head of School.
Teaching (70%)
- Teach at least 8 live seminars in the area of content mastery each semester during the academic year.
- Teach asynchronous student enrollments in the area of content mastery during the academic year.
- Teach courses in the area of content mastery during the summer school session.
- Teach course extensions in both the fall and spring terms.
- Lead engaging and interactive weekly live seminar sessions during the academic year.
- Host teacher and department office hours.
- Provide substantive, high quality, timely feedback to students.
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date gradebook.
- Provide substitute teaching planning and support when teachers in the department are absent.
- Oversee the department’s honors’ program, to include enrollments and pacing communication.
- Tutor Ignite and Passion Exploration students as enrollment needs determine.
Curriculum Support (15%)
- Oversee a special curricular support project/role as assigned by the Director of Curriculum.
- Provide additional curricular support in the academic department of oversight, to include responding to and resolving curricular errors, updating curricular content and materials in the LMS, creating interactive video content, and other supportive tasks as deemed necessary by the Director of Curriculum.
- Prepare live course pages in the LMS at the beginning of each academic term.
- Review & analyze end-of-course data & feedback to inform curricular & programmatic improvements within the department of oversight.
Other Duties as Assigned
Job Requirements, Skills, and Experience:
- Graduate degree in teaching, education, curriculum, school leadership, or an associated field highly preferred.
- Five or more years’ teaching experience at the secondary or middle school level required, preferably in a virtual environment.
- Technologically proficient in student information and learning management systems required.
- Supervision, management, and/or mentoring of teachers preferred.
- Active state certification in teaching or the equivalent preferred.
- Compassionate, ethical, and empathetic orientation and outlook.
- Highly organized and detail and deadline oriented.
- Persuasive written and verbal communication skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
- Ability to foster a cooperative and healthy work environment.
- High flexibility.
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
