Job Overview

Location: Puerto Rico

We are seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer to join our team as we prepare to launch our commercial product. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with AWS cloud services, containerization, and infrastructure automation to support our production environment running on Kubernetes.

About the Role

This position will join our small but growing DevOps team. The successful candidate will have significant autonomy in making infrastructure decisions and implementing best practices in our AWS environment. As we prepare for commercial launch, this role is critical to ensuring our infrastructure is scalable, reliable, and secure.

We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a deep understanding of DevOps philosophy and principles, not just technical proficiency. The ideal candidate should have well-formed opinions about infrastructure architecture, deployment strategies, and operational best practices, backed by real-world experience. We value team members who can articulate the "why" behind technical decisions and who approach infrastructure as a strategic asset rather than just a technical implementation.

As a distributed team, we place high value on proactive communication, transparency, and a bias for action. The ability to communicate openly and frequently across time zones, take initiative without constant supervision, and drive projects forward independently are essential qualities for success in our environment.

Candidates who demonstrate strong AWS knowledge, container expertise, and excellent communication skills will be prioritized, even if they don't meet all preferred qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable AWS cloud infrastructure utilizing best practices for security, performance, and cost optimization
  • Architect and manage containerized applications within Kubernetes production environments, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance
  • Develop and refine infrastructure-as-code using Terraform to ensure consistent, reproducible deployments
  • Configure and optimize CI/CD pipelines in GitLab to facilitate reliable, automated application deployment
  • Engineer and support local Kubernetes development environments to ensure parity with production
  • Configure and maintain database systems, including performance tuning and backup/recovery strategies
  • Implement robust monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure service reliability
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide timely resolution of production incidents

Required Qualifications

  • Proven experience with AWS services (certification a plus)
  • Strong Docker experience and container orchestration knowledge
  • Production Kubernetes implementation experience
  • Understanding of Infrastructure as Code principles
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline implementation and maintenance
  • Basic knowledge of relational and non-relational databases
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a startup environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Senior-level Terraform expertise
  • Experience with GitLab CI workflows
  • Familiarity with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio)
  • Experience with Argo CD for continuous delivery
  • Knowledge of Helm for Kubernetes package management
  • Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, or Golang
  • Previous startup experience
