Utility Field Inspector

Position Summary

Integrity PSC is seeking a highly skilled Substation Inspector to support electric utility infrastructure inspection programs. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of transmission and distribution systems.

The Substation Inspector is responsible for performing detailed field inspections of substation equipment and facilities, identifying potential risks, and documenting findings that support maintenance planning and asset management strategies. This position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate is a Journeyman Lineman or Journeyman Substation Technician with hands-on experience in utility environments and a deep understanding of substation systems and components.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and detailed inspections of transmission and distribution substations, including yard equipment, structures, and supporting infrastructure
  • Inspect major substation components, including:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Disconnect switches
    • Bus structures and buswork
    • Instrument transformers
    • Capacitor banks and reactors
    • Protection and control equipment
    • Grounding systems
    • Station batteries and DC systems
  • Identify, assess, and document equipment deficiencies such as:
    • Oil leaks
    • Corrosion or structural deterioration
    • Insulator damage or contamination
    • Thermal or mechanical stress indicators
    • Vegetation encroachment
    • Security or site condition concerns
  • Verify equipment labeling, asset identification, and nameplate data
  • Document inspection results using digital tools, mobile devices, and standardized reporting platforms
  • Capture clear photographic evidence and detailed field notes to support engineering review and maintenance planning
  • Report conditions that may pose safety hazards, environmental risks, or reliability concerns
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to support corrective action planning
  • Monitor overall site conditions, including fencing, grounding, lighting, drainage, and general housekeeping
  • Support asset management and reliability programs through condition-based inspection data
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with OSHA regulations, NESC standards, and company safety policies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Journeyman Lineman or Journeyman Substation Technician certification
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in electric utility transmission, distribution, or substation operations
  • Strong working knowledge of substation equipment and high-voltage electrical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • One-line diagrams
    • Substation schematics
    • Protection and control drawings
  • Proven ability to identify abnormal equipment conditions and potential reliability risks
  • Experience using mobile inspection software, tablets, or digital reporting systems
  • Strong commitment to safety standards and procedures
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel within assigned territory

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in substation construction, maintenance, commissioning, or inspection
  • Familiarity with utility asset management or reliability programs
  • Knowledge of protection and control systems
  • Experience with infrared thermography or other condition monitoring technologies
  • Previous experience supporting utility inspection or engineering programs
