Designer I, Distribution Design

Position Summary

The Distribution Designer I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the design and development of electric distribution projects. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers and designers, this position assists in producing construction-ready designs for overhead and underground systems in a fast-paced, standards-driven environment.

This role is ideal for individuals looking to build foundational knowledge in utility distribution design, develop technical skills, and gain exposure to real-world infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems (typically 4kV–35kV)
  • Support preparation of construction work packages, including staking sheets, bills of material, and design drawings
  • Utilize design and mapping tools (e.g., GIS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar platforms) to develop and update system designs
  • Interpret and apply client standards, engineering guidelines, and basic NESC requirements
  • Perform basic calculations, including load estimates and material quantities
  • Conduct field visits to collect data, verify existing conditions, and support design validation
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and field personnel to ensure accurate and constructible designs
  • Assist with permitting documentation, easement exhibits, and right-of-way coordination
  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation in client systems
  • Identify and escalate design issues or discrepancies to senior team members

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 0–2 years of experience in utility design, construction, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of electric distribution systems or willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with CAD or GIS tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar) is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow established standards and processes
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment

Preferred:

  • Internship or prior exposure to utility, construction, or engineering environments
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground distribution components
  • Exposure to safety standards and utility work practices

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Combination of office and field work, including site visits in varying terrain and environmental conditions
  • Ability to work in a structured, high-volume production environment
  • Willingness to learn client standards, tools, and workflows
