Position: Lead Tooling & Unity Engineer

We are seeking a Lead Tooling & Unity Engineer to join our Engineering team. You will be key in developing and improving internal tools that empower our 3D and VR content creation workflows. Working closely with simulation engineers, content designers, and artists, you will create custom Unity tools, automation solutions, and no-code frameworks that streamline content production and enhance our training simulations.

This role blends technical leadership/people management with hands-on development, allowing you to architect new tools, optimize existing workflows, and drive innovation in simulation tooling. You will lead a small team and help establish best practices in automated quality assurance (AQA) for Unity-based applications.

Why this position:

  • Drive innovation in VR & Unity tooling – Build innovative tools that shape the future of interactive training.
  • Impact real-world education – Your work will directly improve how people learn skilled trades in a rapidly evolving industry.
  • Work with a collaborative, forward-thinking team – Engineers and content creators working together to push boundaries in EdTech.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and maintain internal Unity-based tools to support content creation, 3D artwork pipelines, and simulation development.
  • Collaborate with content designers and simulation engineers to identify pain points and build solutions that optimize workflows.
  • Develop intuitive no-code tools that empower designers and instructors to create and modify training content without engineering support.
  • Improve automation and AQA strategies, including Unity Unit Tests, automated 3D simulation testing, and stability improvements.
  • Lead a small team of Unity and JavaScript engineers, providing technical guidance, setting best practices, and ensuring smooth collaboration across disciplines.
  • Enhance existing tooling while developing new features that enable localization, content expansion, and new interaction types in our VR training platform.
  • Leverage modern web technologies (React, TypeScript, JavaScript) to develop efficient tools that integrate with Unity.
  • Translate complex technical needs into user-friendly solutions, ensuring engineers, artists, and instructional designers can collaborate seamlessly.

Who you are:

  • A collaborative leader – You enjoy working with cross-functional teams and leading a small engineering group to drive projects forward.
  • An expert in Unity tooling – You have deep experience building custom Unity tools, editor extensions, and workflow automation solutions.
  • A problem-solver – You love finding inefficiencies, designing scalable solutions, and automating repetitive tasks.
  • Detail-oriented – You triple-check your numbers, ensure tools are reliable, and have a strong eye for usability.
  • A builder – You love creating tools that empower teams and improve production efficiency.
  • A learner – You stay current with new Unity features, best practices in AQA, and emerging no-code solutions.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years relevant experience as a Unity Engineer. People management experience is not required, but the desire to lead, manage and mentor is!
  • Unity development experience, focusing on editor tooling and workflow automation.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript and experience building web-based tools (React/TypeScript experience preferred).
  • Experience developing no-code solutions to support non-technical users.
  • Familiarity with automated testing strategies for Unity, including unit tests, simulation testing, and QA automation.
  • Ability to lead a small team, mentor engineers, and drive technical direction.
  • Strong collaboration skills, working across disciplines and effectively communicating technical concepts.
  • A “full-stack mindset”, not hesitating to do what it takes to solve a problem end-to-end, even if it requires going outside the original job description.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States for any employer without stipulations and be residents of the United States.
  • The company conducts background checks after extending offers of employment. These screenings are performed by third-party specialists. All roles require I-9 verification, E-Verify, a background check, and a drug and alcohol test. Additionally, depending on the position, candidates may undergo employment history verification, DMV record check, reference checks, education and credential verification, and a credit history review.

You’ll have an edge if you have:

  • Experience working in EdTech, game development, or interactive training platforms.
  • Previous experience building tools for VR development and simulation environments.
  • Experience in cloud hosting architecture (GCP, AWS, Azure) and CI/CD (Gitlab) for build pipelines.
