Tax Manager

The Opportunity

The Tax Manager will collaborate with the tax director and advisor to design tax processes and procedures to prepare Root as the company shifts towards profitability. The Tax Manager will prepare or complete detailed reviews of tax provision calculations and assist with third party firms  for federal and state income tax returns, estimated tax payments, tax accounting/accruals, and state tax planning. Root is looking for a candidate with a strong background in ASC740 (tax provisions), SSAP101 (STAT tax reporting), Insurance tax, and state income tax. The manager will work across the tax team and collaborate with Finance Leadership to deliver accurate and timely tax information to internal and external stakeholders.


Salary Range:  $105,000 - $125,000 (STI & LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Manage tax provision processes for GAAP and STAT reporting. This includes quarterly and year end preparation or detailed review of tax permanent and temporary adjustments, tax footnotes (GAAP and STAT), process improvement through automation and tax system maintenance, and team development. 
  • Oversee relationship with third party tax preparer and facilitate federal and state income tax returns, estimates, and planning. Analyze and prepare tax accruals. 
  • Work with finance leadership to build out processes for tax related cash and P&L forecasting and fixed expense budget planning


What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 7+ Years of tax accounting for GAAP (ASC740) and STAT (SSAP101)
    • Critical thinking and research skills 
    • Attention to detail while maintaining efficiency
    • Prepare tax calculations, journal entries, and tax footnotes
    • Process improvement
  • Written and verbal communication skills:
    • Ability to formally document accounting policy and tax law 
    • Working cross functionally across the business with leaders at all levels of the organization
    • Responding to state regulators & auditors
  • Self motivation to work in a fast paced but autonomous environment
    • Manage multiple projects simultaneously
    • Prioritize competing demands
    • Coaching and development of team members 
  • State tax compliance and planning experience
    • Review state income tax returns prepared by third party accounting firm and facilitate quarterly estimated tax payments
