Senior Payroll Specialist 

 

Journal Technologies is looking for a highly experienced and detail-driven Senior Payroll Specialist to take ownership of global payroll operations across the U.S., Canada, and Australia for our 400-person organization. You’ll be responsible for accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing, with a strong focus on multi-country payroll, reconciliations, and cross-functional collaboration. Responsibilities: 

  • Process and oversee bi-weekly and monthly payrolls across United States, Canada, and Australia, ensuring compliance with all regional laws and company policies. 
  • Maintain accurate employee records including salary changes, bonuses, tax information, and deductions. 
  • Perform monthly and quarterly payroll reconciliations, ensuring alignment between payroll, HRIS, and accounting systems. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, provincial, and Australian employment laws and tax regulations. 
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and external vendors to manage benefit deductions, equity transactions, and payroll funding. 
  • Assist with year-end reporting including W-2s (U.S.), T4s (Canada), and payment summaries (Australia). 
  • Act as the subject matter expert for all payroll-related inquiries and audits, both internal and external. 
  • Support payroll system upgrades or transitions and help improve existing processes and documentation. 
  • Monitor changes in payroll legislation in all relevant countries and ensure company compliance. 

Requirements: 

  • 7+ years of payroll experience, including multi-country payroll (U.S., Canada, and Australia preferred). 
  • Hands-on experience managing payroll for a mid-sized company (~400 employees) across multiple geographies. 
  • Strong working knowledge of regional tax laws, statutory reporting requirements, and labor regulations in U.S., Canada, and Australia. 
  • Experience with payroll platforms such as Rippling, ADP, Workday, or equivalents that support global payroll. 
  • Proficient in payroll reconciliations, general ledger coding, and working with Finance on audits and close. 
  • Highly organized with sharp attention to detail, discretion, and confidentiality. 
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially in a remote or hybrid environment. 
  • Certification such as CPP (U.S.), PCP (Canada), or Certificate IV in Payroll (Australia) is a strong plus. 

Nice to Have: 

  • Experience with HRIS/payroll integrations (e.g., Workday, BambooHR, HiBob, etc.). 
  • Exposure to stock-based compensation and its treatment in payroll. 
  • Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with reporting and analytics.

The pay range for this role is:

80,000 - 100,000 USD per year (JTI Los Angeles, USA)
