About the role
The Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all mechanical and non-mechanical systems aboard the Jean Ribault vessel. This role ensures compliance with United States Coast Guard (USCG) regulations and manufacturer specifications. The Engineer leads preventative maintenance efforts, supervises junior engineers, and plays a key role in upholding a culture of safety, professionalism, and operational excellence.
What you'll do
- Ensure all work areas, including engine rooms, are clean, organized, and safe.
- Conduct and participate in safety drills, training, and meetings.
- Inspect and maintain safety equipment in accordance with USCG regulations.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely handle hazardous materials as per MSDS guidelines.
- Assist in ensuring the vessel is always inspection-ready and compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Operations & Maintenance
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly preventative maintenance in accordance with the vessel’s maintenance plan.
- Manage mechanical and non-mechanical systems to meet operational needs and legal standards.
- Supervise and mentor junior engineers and maintenance staff.
- Conduct hands-on repairs and manage improvement projects.
- Monitor fuel, water, and shore power operations as directed.
- Maintain and review maintenance logs and records; manage parts procurement and inventory.
- Ensure proper disposal of sewage, trash, and oily water according to all regulations.
- Maintain a professional appearance and positive interactions with all internal and external clients.
- Ensure all spending is approved, conscientious, and cost-effective.
- Participate in meetings, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, and report all deficiencies to the Captain

Qualifications
- Valid USCG DDE 4000 HP / 500 Gross Ton credential (must be maintained).
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or ability to obtain and maintain.
- Valid First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain and maintain.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- DD214 form if claiming Veteran status.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to lead and mentor others in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment.
- High level of attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications.
- Physical capability to meet the demands of the role, including lifting up to 75 lbs and maneuvering in confined spaces.
- Proven track record in the marine industry.
- Prior supervisory experience in a similar setting.
- Must pass pre-employment, random, and post-incident drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the USCG.
