About the role
The Deckhand supports the Vessel Captain and crew in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. This role involves performing a variety of tasks essential to the operation and maintenance of the vessel, including handling lines, securing cargo, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting with passenger services. The Deckhand also plays an integral role in guest experience, especially during sightseeing and whale-watching tours, as well as private charters.
What you'll do
- Operational Readiness: Prepare the vessel(s) for operational readiness, ensuring all necessary checks and preparations are completed before departure.
- Watchkeeping: Stand watch, monitoring for safety and security concerns, and perform other watchkeeping duties such as look-out, Quartermaster Messenger, Radio Watch, Signal Man, or Helmsman as assigned by the captain.
- Guest Experience: Assist passengers during sightseeing and whale-watching tours, providing information and ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey.
- Private Charters: Provide high-quality service to guests during private charter voyages, ensuring their needs are met and they have an enjoyable and safe experience.
- Safety and Emergency Duties: Perform safety functions assigned on the Watch Quarter and Emergency Station Bill, and be familiar with ground tackle, emergency gear, deck gear, and vessel emergency plans.

- Preventative Maintenance: Ensure deck and engine room preventative maintenance, including lubricating machinery and equipment, and performing minor repairs as needed.
- Sanitation Duties: work on transferring and pumping sewage and water, and maintain clean passenger spaces, including restrooms, trash areas, common areas, pilot house, and gangways throughout the day, particularly at the beginning and end of shifts.
- General Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the captain, ensuring the vessel always operates smoothly and safely.
Qualifications
- Previous maritime experience is preferred but not required. Training will be provided.
- TWIC card required or be able to obtain one with in first 30 days of employment.
- Guest Experience preferred
- Basic Safety Training (BST) certification is preferred.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
- Additional certifications may be required based on the vessel's operational area.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Basic understanding of maritime operations, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about environmental sustainability practices.
