About the role: 

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under the direction of the Manager of Curriculum and Staff Development, the Heritage Language Teacher works with a group of approximately 20 students in an educational setting in an ASPIRE after school program at a public elementary school. An ASPIRE after-school program typically serves 100-200 students for three to four hours per day, from the time the regular school day ends until about 6:00 PM. 


The Heritage Language Teacher will implement a Heritage Language program focused on Mandarin language acquisition. The program will include language practice, cultural activities, and daily snack/supper. 

What you'll do:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Plan and facilitate a Heritage Language curriculum in Spanish, Mandarin or Vietnamese that encourages language development and respect for cultural and language diversity in the classroom and community.

  2. Supervise a group of about 20 students in a classroom or library setting;

  3. Ensure every student in assigned group is signed in and out on Daily Attendance Roster;

  4. Ensure that all students are following school and district policies at all times;

  5. Assist Site Coordinator in recruiting students to the program;

  6. Distribute snacks to assigned students;

  7. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Must be fluent in the targeted language: Mandarin. 

  • Minimum 1 year of teaching experience.

  • Teaching Certificate (preferred)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Interest in working with, mentoring, and tutoring at-risk youth;
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, peers, school staff, and others;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, peers, school staff and others;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and act as a positive role model for students and staff;
  • Ability to write basic reports summarizing events;
LANGUAGE & COMPUTER SKILLS
  • The ability to speak Spanish, Mandarin, or Vietnamese is desired at many of our school sites;

  • Competence with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
ā— Must be willing and able to travel anywhere in the region LEARN serves for a job assignment, off-site meetings, trainings, and events.

Condition of Employment & Benefits:
Must complete LiveScan and obtain Department of Justice and FBI Criminal Background Clearances, as well as Health Clearance (TB).

This is a part-time, non-benefited, non-exempt hourly position. This position is dependent on funding from the California Department of Education. The candidate must be available to work during after school hours and occasionally on weekends. Hours of work will vary but will not exceed 29 hours per week; specific times and schedules vary, depending upon the school and needs of the program


The work calendar for Heritage Language Teachers and all other part-time casual field staff aligns with the academic calendars of our partner school districts. The job has recess breaks during fall, winter, spring and summer. The job resumes after every break and staff are expected to return to work on the date requested by LEARN.


The pay range for this role is:

30 - 30 USD per hour (All Locations)
