Associate Director, Major Gifts


The Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, in partnership with Stanford Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, unlocks philanthropy to transform health for children and families in Northern California - and around the world. Through fundraising and grantmaking, the Foundation drives scientific research, innovation, and policy change that will improve care, advance cures, and reform healthcare systems for this and future generations.  

MAIN FOCUS: You’ll manage a portfolio of donors in support of pediatric and maternal medicine at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the Stanford University School of Medicine.

LOCATION: Palo Alto, CA (hybrid); the successful candidate for this role will be based in the Bay Area. This is a hybrid role, meaning you’ll work in person (i.e. onsite in Palo Alto and/or on field visits with donors) a minimum of 8 days per month, and often more frequently, as dictated by business needs.


Reporting to the Director, Major Gifts, you’ll grow and maintain a pipeline of donors with the capacity to make gifts of $100,000 to $5M+. You’ll raise funds in support of a variety of pediatric subspecialties and manage faculty relationships in those areas. Gifts will support clinical care, research, education, and more, depending on philanthropic opportunity.

The compensation range for this role is $130,000 - $160,000 annually.

  • Focusing on field work to build and advance relationships with a large portfolio of major gift donors and prospects, individuals and families who are capable of investing $100,000+.
  • Qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting new major gift donors to the Foundation through grateful family fundraising programs.
  • Demonstrating strong understanding of institutional priorities and giving vehicles with an ability to apply knowledge in the creation of proposals that balance donor and institutional goals; ensuring proposals are vetted with leadership, appropriately scoped, and well-crafted.
  • Successfully closing gifts, negotiating gift terms, and ensuring gift agreements are created and followed.
  • Engaging new and current prospects by recognizing, curating, and communicating news and updates that are relevant and interesting.
  • Navigating complex situations with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ensuring donor stewardship, providing timely, compelling, and consistent engagement and recognition with donors.
  • Engaging select donors as volunteers and advisors, enhancing their connection to the Foundation and other prospects.
  • Diligently tracking portfolio activity in donor database.
  • Actively coaching and building relationships of trust and mutual respect with faculty and administrators, which are rooted in shared goals.
  • Leading and guiding faculty to build philanthropic programs, including but not limited to, educating them on fundraising best practices and the Foundation’s role, producing informative and engaging materials, and creating engagement opportunities focused on qualification, cultivation, and stewardship.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in non-profit fundraising or sales with demonstrated success securing commitments of $100,000 or more (or equivalent amount in a sales role).
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends and travel when needed.

  • Experience in higher education and/or healthcare.
  • Familiarity with donor databases.

  • You’re a self-starter with a growth and learning mindset. You can juggle a number of projects and slash through obstacles, while staying on course to meeting desired outcomes. 
  • You have high integrity. You are comfortable working with sensitive and confidential information and maintaining the utmost level of confidentiality, in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • You’re mission oriented. You possess a genuine interest in our mission to support maternal and child health programs at Stanford University.
