WHO YOU ARE 

The Underwriter role is responsible for reviewing mortgage loan applications and deciding on its approval or rejection by evaluating the submitted documents and the applicant's eligibility.

  • Highly analytical with excellent communication skills 
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment 
  • Well-versed in federal and state mortgage regulations (TILA, ECOA, RESPA, etc.) 
  • Skilled in appraisal review and risk assessment 
  • Organized with strong customer service orientation 
  • Expert user of AUS systems (DU, LP) 
  • Proficient in underwriting complex purchase and refinance transactions 
  • Capable of full manual underwriting across all loan types 
  • Self-directed with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment 
  • Deeply knowledgeable of current FNMA/FHLMC; VA, FHA, and USDA underwriting guidelines 
  • Have significant experience in underwriting state bond loans.  
  • Conversant with QM (Qualified Mortgage) and ATR (Ability to Repay) regulations 

 
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING… 

  • Conduct thorough reviews of loan files to identify deficiencies, risks, and compliance issues 
  • Issue clear, concise, and accurate loan conditions  
  • Meet or exceed established turn-time standards 
  • Analyze complex income scenarios, including multi-year tax returns 
  • Collaborate positively with processors and loan officers to move files efficiently to closing  
  • Accurately input and validate loan data within the client operating system 
  • Run and interpret AUS findings and vendor reports 
  • Complete in-depth appraisal reviews, approving or escalating as appropriate 
  • Review and clear conditions promptly while maintaining service-level agreements 
  • Meet quality control and audit performance targets 
  • Manage multiple loans, multiple REOs per borrower as needed 
  • Complete all Maxwell-mandated training within required deadlines to maintain regulatory and operational proficiency. 


IDEALLY, YOU’LL HAVE... 

  • 7+ years current experience in residential mortgage lending. 
  • The ability to manually and using AUS, underwrite complex residential mortgage loans, including Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, Non-QM, DSCR, state bond loans, and construction loans (1X and 2X close) 
  • Manually underwrite and validate loan files that fall outside automated approval parameters 
  • Perform comprehensive income calculation and analysis (W-2, self-employed, tax returns), assets, credit, collateral, and other risk factors 
  • Review and approve appraisal reports for accuracy, risk, and guideline compliance 
  • Ensure loans meet investor guidelines (FNMA, FHLMC, GNMA), regulatory requirements (QM, ATR), and applicable credit policies 
  • Issue clear and actionable conditions; review cleared conditions for sufficiency 
  • Maintain service-level standards for underwriting turn times and condition reviews 
  • Participate in pre-funding and post-closing quality control processes to ensure loan salability 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for underwriters, processors, and loan officers on guideline interpretations 


Compensation Range: $36 - $38.46/hr
