The Staff Engineer is a leader who solves problems of the highest complexity and scope for Measurabl’s Engineering department. This role exerts significant influence on the objectives, goals, and technical direction of the organization. The Staff Engineer is responsible for nurturing a culture of continuous improvement by adapting their wealth of professional expertise and experience to Measurabl’s specific technical and organizational challenges.


You will play a crucial role in bridging an essential legacy monolithic application to a modern distributed architecture with a focus on scalability and efficiency, driving innovation and engineering excellence. This will require translating complex principles into practical, real-world applications and bringing the team along. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of our technical landscape, fostering a collaborative environment where innovative solutions thrive, and ensuring that Measurabl continues to set the standard for excellence in the industry. Your leadership and technical acumen will be key in steering our engineering efforts towards even greater achievements.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

The essential functions and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to, the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed. 

Development & Infrastructure

  • Participate in high-level architecture design and contribute to long-term technical strategy

  • Write and deploy critical software while accounting for it’s organizational and operational impact

  • Drive improvements in craft and process, including test, operational capability, performance, deployment velocity, and scope reduction 

  • Help improve fast feedback loops and improve the virtuous cycle built from deploying often, learning, and reiterating

  • Contribute to data platform architecture

  • Partner with stakeholders to refine features, work definitions, and requirements 

  • Take technical and executional ownership of large facets of a project, or a complete project, and guide a team in delivering that project without oversight

  • Perform feasibility studies to validate capability and functionality

  • Debug advanced software issues; determine the root cause and provide a fix without collateral damage

  • Create technical and domain expertise and apply that to Measurabl products and problems

  • Provide ongoing support and maintenance for live systems

  • Evaluate implications of using AI tools, including build vs. buy decisions, operational and maintenance costs, and the potential for these tools to be leveraged for accelerated or easier development by other teams

Collaboration

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to work with a cross-functional team

  • Partner with Engineering leadership in setting strategic technical and organizational direction

  • Provide technical leadership to development team members to develop team skills and ensure Measurabl delivers the best possible product to our customers

  • Partner with Engineering managers and teams to improve on software design of new and existing applications

  • Regularly introduce new tools, concepts, and best practices that improve and drive the department forward

  • Participate in team code reviews and provide thoughtful commentary and assistance where needed

  • Provide recommendations to management for improving documentation and software development process standards 

  • Participate in solving department-wide initiatives and problems with other Staff Engineers, Engineering managers, and the Engineering leadership team

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of domain-driven design and modern data mesh architectures

  • In-depth knowledge of observability and modern DevOps practices and tools

  • Testing best practices is a strong plus

  • Ability to refine a problem, make decisions, and lead a team to execute based on those decisions.

  • Languages: Java, Scala, TypeScript, Go, Kotlin, Ruby, Python, Terraform

  • Frameworks: React, Apache Kafka, OPA

  • Architectures: Microservices, Data Mesh, Domain Driven Design, Kubernetes

  • Tools: AWS, DataDog, Github


Education & Experience:

  • 8+ years of experience as an Engineer in a professional setting

  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates ability to develop, release, and operate a suite of web applications

  • Experience leading medium to large software development projects

  • A combination of professional or educational experience (whether formal or informal) that affords you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities above
