About Middle East Institute

Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. It is a non-partisan think tank providing expert policy analysis, educational and professional development services, and a hub for engaging with the region's arts and culture.


The Development Department at the Middle East Institute (MEI) focuses on increasing institutional capacity through strategic initiatives, including fundraising, membership, events, grants, and donor management. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit development while working closely with the Chief Development Officer, Associate Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations, Development Coordinator, and Development Administrator.

 

Internship Overview:
We are seeking a motivated intern to assist the Development Department in various activities related to fundraising and relationship-building with individuals, corporations, and foundations. The intern will be engaged in a variety of tasks aimed at providing exposure to the inner workings of nonprofit development.

 

Learning Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Support the team in conducting research, writing proposals, and organizing events related to donor engagement.
  • Assist with relationship management and administrative tasks, gaining insight into the cultivation of relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Observe and learn how a nonprofit organization strategically approaches and develops partnerships with individuals, corporations, and government entities.
  • Gain practical experience in growing the development function within a nonprofit organization.

Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to draft, edit, and refine letters, proposals, and other written materials.
  • Excellent research and organizational abilities.
  • Proficiency in Adobe, Google Drive, and general internet applications.

Internship Details:

  • Salary: This is an unpaid internship, intended for educational purposes. The internship provides the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in a nonprofit environment.
  • Relocation: Not offered. This internship is remote or based in the Washington, D.C. area.
