Position Summary


Our San Mateo campus is looking for an experienced barista to operate its weekday gathering space and cafe, Menlo San Mateo Cafe (MSM Cafe).  This position is a part-time position up to 25 hours per week.  The Managing Barista will report to the Associate Campus Pastor, partner with other Managing Barista's, and help supervise part-time baristas. The main responsibilities are to open, operate, and close the cafe and gathering space according to operating hours.  Specifically,


Beverage Preparation:

  • Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee, tea, espresso, and specialty drinks. 
  • Follow established recipes and techniques to ensure consistent quality. 
  • Potentially create and experiment with new drink recipes. 

Customer Service:

  • Greet customers, take orders, and provide friendly and efficient service. 
  • Answer customer questions about menu items and ingredients. 
  • Build relationships with regular customers and learn their preferences. 

Operational Tasks:

  • Prepare space to open per operating guidelines
  • Operate coffee equipment, such as espresso machines, grinders, and coffee brewers. 
  • Handle cash and credit card transactions for donations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including the coffee bar, equipment, and surrounding area. Empty trash, recycle, and compost as needed and at closing.
  • Maintain a clean and organized public area (e.g. clear trash, wipe down tables, address spills, etc.)
  • Maintain clean restrooms.  Periodically wipe down counters, clean trash bins, refill soap, paper towels, sanitary supplies, etc.)
  • Report to supervisor any maintenance and safety related items.
  • Stock and replenish supplies as needed. 
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Supervise baristas on duty.
  • Prepare and serve food items, such as pastries or sandwiches (if applicable)
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering supplies. 
  • Train new employees.
  • Follow closing instructions per operating guidelines

Qualifications

  • 1-5 years experience as a barista
  • Exceptional ability to take instruction and receive constructive feedback
  • Exemplary people skills that fosters a welcoming and communal atmosphere
  • Passion to learn and serve others

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to operate and care for cafe equipment (e.g. drip and espresso machines, grinder, etc.
  • Experience making drip coffee and specialty drinks
  • Experience supervising and training


Work Conditions

  • This job regularly operates in a church setting with office equipment, storage containers, classrooms, cafe & machine shop. 
  • Must be physically fit to perform a variety of tasks, including lifting, carrying, and moving objects & cafe supplies, operating cafe machinery & tools. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate equipment, re-stock, etc.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to ability to safely operate cafe equipment
  • Days and hours of work are Mon-Fri 7:30-3PM (Day and Hours subject to change)

The pay range for this role is:

20 - 23 USD per hour (San Mateo)
