About the role
As a member of our Partner Services team, the Senior Underwriting Assistant is responsible for supporting the underwriting team in all aspects of the underwriting process, including analyzing risks, assessing policy information, and determining appropriate coverage levels.
What you'll do
- Review and analyze submission data and make appropriate decisions on its use. Recommend underwriting decisions to Underwriters; prepare pricing model and assign within team.
- Use underwriting information and internal resources, i.e., inspection reports, claims history, loss control and commercial applications to make underwriting decisions.
- Assist in file and policy preparation.
- Review, negotiate, accept, or decline risks along with the guidance of senior employees.
- Assist in audit preparation.
- Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of Mission’s underwriting guidelines, coverage forms, enhancements, rating plans and workflow.
- Prepare and process policies and endorsements for issuance in accordance with binders and Underwriters instructions.
- Code premium in accordance with division guidelines and Underwriter instructions.
- Assist in the review of new and renewal submissions to determine if they meet underwriting criteria, and for completeness of documentation.
- Request and review incoming Broker of Record letters, as appropriate.
- Request predetermined documentation from the broker that will be required for rating, quoting, binding, and policy issuance.
- Review documentation as received and input into the underwriting dashboard.
- Review policy information and ensure that all policies are processed accurately and efficiently.
- Underwrite risks and support the Underwriting team in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority.
- Assist in the review of guidelines and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP’s)
- Work with management to serve as a mentor to Junior underwriting assistants.
Qualifications
- Experience in the commercial insurance industry and regulatory environment.
- 3-5 years minimum directly supporting commercial lines underwriters.
- Bachelor's degree; OR 5+ years of experience in insurance underwriting.
- Working knowledge of PDF, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the year.
- Experience in the commercial insurance industry and regulatory environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Project management software – like Monday.com
- Familiarity with Policy Administration software - Origami

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
- Must demonstrate self-motivation, dependability, as well as strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

- Requires a quiet work environment with regular sitting at a computer for extended periods of time.
- Regular use of hands and fingers.
- Frequent talking or hearing.
- Vision requirements: Close, distance, color, peripheral, focus and depth perception.
Additional Information
This is a remote position. Planned, in-office activities may be required on occasion (typically 2-4x per year).
