ABOUT THE ROLE

Momentum Indoor Climbing inspires and empowers individuals of all ages to discover the joy of climbing. Our summer camps provide a fun, high-energy environment where kids build confidence, develop climbing skills, and create lasting memories.

The Summer Camp Head Counselor plays a key leadership role in delivering safe, structured, and engaging camp experiences. This position is responsible for leading daily camp operations, supervising camp staff, and ensuring campers have an unforgettable experience rooted in skill development, teamwork, and fun.

The Head Counselor works closely with the Youth Program Manager (YPM) and Summer Camp Assistant Manager (SCAM) to execute curriculum, support staff development, and maintain high standards of safety and customer experience.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Camp Leadership and Execution

  • Lead and instruct daily summer camp programming for various age groups.
  • Oversee camp counselors to ensure a safe, organized, and positive environment.
  • Implement established curriculum and adapt activities to meet camper needs.
  • Teach age-appropriate climbing skills, including:
    • Bouldering techniques, movement skills, and falling safety.
    • Top-rope climbing and auto-belay systems where applicable.
  • Enforce all safety policies and recognize and address unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Foster a culture of encouragement, teamwork, and personal growth.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and provide regular feedback to camp counselors.
  • Lead staff check-ins and support ongoing training throughout the season.
  • Model professionalism, enthusiasm, and strong communication.
  • Assist leadership in identifying staffing needs and addressing performance concerns.

Daily Operations and Parent Communication

  • Supervise daily camp schedules, transitions, and activities.
  • Assist with camp setup and breakdown each day.
  • Support operations staff with camp-related gear and logistics.
  • Communicate professionally with parents and guardians before and after camp, providing feedback on camper progress and experience.
  • Coordinate with gym leadership to ensure smooth program execution.


REQUIREMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • Must be 16+ years of age
  • Minimum 2 years of climbing experience with a strong passion for the sport.
  • Experience coaching, facilitating, teaching, or leading youth programs.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with children ages 4 to 16.
  • Sound judgment and consistent enforcement of safety standards.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.

Hours and Availability

  • Seasonal position, 20 to 40 hours per week.
  • Camps operate during the summer season, generally between mid June and late August, depending on location.
  • Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, and occasional extended camp days based on programming needs.

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working in a loud, high-energy environment.
  • Ability to speak confidently in front of large groups.
  • Physically able to climb and demonstrate movement on the wall.
  • Able to stand and walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Comfortable working at height and moving safely on climbing terrain.


COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND PERKS

  • Starting pay of $16.00 per hour
  • Seasonal employees are not eligible for company insurance benefits.
  • Complimentary membership to all Momentum locations during employment.
  • Summer Camp staff who successfully complete the full agreed-upon camp season and remain in good standing will receive a 4-month individual multi-gym membership following the conclusion of their seasonal employment.

The pay range for this role is:

16 - 16 USD per hour (Fort Union)
