ABOUT THE ROLE

Momentum Indoor Climbing inspires and empowers individuals of all ages to discover the joy of climbing. Our Summer Camps introduce young climbers to movement, problem-solving, teamwork, and confidence in a fun and supportive environment.

The Summer Camp Counselor plays a key role in creating an engaging, safe, and high-energy camp experience. This position is ideal for individuals who love climbing, enjoy working with kids, and thrive in an active and dynamic setting where every day is different.

This is a seasonal position that works closely with the summer camp team to deliver exceptional camp experiences.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Camp Instruction and Facilitation

  • Lead and instruct youth climbing camps in a safe, structured, and engaging manner
  • Teach age-appropriate climbing skills based on facility type:
    • Full-service gyms: Top-rope climbing, auto-belay systems, and bouldering
    • Bouldering-only gyms: Movement skills, technique development, and falling safety
  • Lead daily warm-ups, climbing challenges, and team-building activities
  • Facilitate games and off-the-wall activities that promote teamwork and fun
  • Adapt instruction to meet varying skill levels and learning styles

Camper Experience and Supervision

  • Maintain constant supervision and uphold all safety and risk management standards
  • Foster a positive, inclusive environment where campers feel supported and confident
  • Encourage growth in teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving
  • Enforce camp rules and Momentum policies consistently and professionally
  • Communicate clearly with parents and guardians regarding camper progress and daily activities

Daily Operations

  • Set up and break down camp activities and equipment each day
  • Maintain organization of camp gear and assist with equipment management
  • Collaborate with fellow counselors and leadership to ensure smooth daily operations
  • Support a high-energy environment while maintaining structure and safety


REQUIREMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • Must be 14+ years of age
  • Minimum of one year of climbing experience with strong safety awareness is required
  • Ability to supervise and engage large groups of children in an active environment
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear, confident instruction and model positive behavior
  • Enthusiasm for working with youth and sharing a passion for climbing
  • Professionalism, reliability, and the ability to maintain structure in a high-energy setting
  • Previous experience coaching, instructing, teaching, or working with youth is preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification is preferred

Hours and Availability

  • Seasonal position, 20 to 40 hours per week.
  • Camps operate during the summer season, generally between late May and mid August, depending on location.
  • Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, and occasional extended camp days based on programming needs.

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Work in a loud, high-energy gym environment daily.
  • Comfortable working at height and moving up and down climbing walls safely.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces.
  • Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects regularly.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable instructing and speaking to large groups.
  • Able to sit and work at a computer for administrative tasks as needed. 


COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND PERKS

  • Starting pay of $14.00 per hour
  • Seasonal employees are not eligible for company insurance benefits.
  • Complimentary membership to all Momentum locations during employment.
  • Summer Camp staff who successfully complete the full agreed-upon camp season and remain in good standing will receive a 4-month individual multi-gym membership following the conclusion of their seasonal employment.

The pay range for this role is:

14 - 14 USD per hour (Millcreek)
