ABOUT THE ROLE

Momentum Indoor Climbing inspires and empowers individuals of all ages to discover the joy of climbing. Our summer camps create an exciting, supportive environment where young climbers build confidence, learn new skills, and experience the thrill of the vertical world.

The Summer Camp Belayer is a seasonal team member who plays a key role in delivering a safe, fun, and high-energy camp experience. Belayers act as an extra set of hands for camp staff, ensuring campers have more opportunities to climb while maintaining Momentum’s highest safety standards. This position supports that gym’s summer camp programming throughout the season.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Camp Support and Engagement

  • Create a positive, encouraging, and exciting environment where campers feel supported and motivated to climb.
  • Actively belay campers throughout camp sessions, increasing the number of climbing opportunities for each participant. 
  • Engage with campers in a professional, energetic, and age-appropriate manner.
  • Gain awareness of individual camper skill levels and needs to help create a meaningful experience for every participant.
  • Support lead camp staff with group management and transitions as needed.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Belay campers in accordance with Momentum’s 5-Point Belay Policy. 
  • Ensure campers are using rental or personal gear in accordance with gym policies and manufacturer specifications. 
  • Maintain constant vigilance while belaying and monitoring climbing areas.
  • Recognize unsafe conditions or behaviors and address them promptly and professionally.
  • Enforce Momentum policies in a friendly, patient, and respectful manner.

Customer Service and Team Collaboration

  • Put the immediate needs and safety of campers first at all times. 
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with campers, parents, and fellow staff.
  • Support a collaborative team culture by assisting other camp staff when needed.
  • Model professionalism and represent Momentum positively in all interactions.


REQUIREMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Experience, Skills, and Certifications

  • Must be 14+ years of age
  • Experienced in the PBUS method of belaying
  • Ability to work with a large group of kids, ages 4-11
  • Experience in coaching, programming, and facilitating is a plus, but not required
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Hours and Availability

  • Seasonal position, 2+ hours per week with Friday availability
  • Camps operate during the summer season, generally between late May and mid August, depending on location.
  • Schedule may include mornings, afternoons, and occasional extended camp days based on programming needs.

Environmental and Physical Demands

  • Work in a loud, high-energy gym environment daily.
  • Comfortable working at height and moving up and down climbing walls safely.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods on uneven surfaces.
  • Able to balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects regularly.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable instructing and speaking to large groups.
  • Able to sit and work at a computer for administrative tasks as needed. 

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS, AND PERKS

  • Starting pay of $14.00/hour, depending on experience.
  • Seasonal employees are not eligible for company insurance benefits.
  • Complimentary membership to all Momentum locations during employment.
  • Summer Camp staff who successfully complete the full agreed-upon camp season and remain in good standing will receive a 4-month individual multi-gym membership following the conclusion of their seasonal employment.
  • 20% discount on Momentum classes, programs, and retail.

The pay range for this role is:

14 - 14 USD per hour (Millcreek)
