About Mytra:
We’re creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We’re applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We’re focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a “sleepy” industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.
About the role
As a Senior Camera Systems Engineer at Mytra, you'll join our Vision AI team as we scale our robotic perception and sensing capabilities. We need an experienced imaging systems architect who will design, build, and optimize the full imaging hardware chain — from illumination and camera systems specification, design, and components selection through detailed sensor specification, imaging geometry, and end-to-end imaging simulations — to deliver the highest-fidelity data to our perception pipeline.
Image quality bounds everything downstream — detection, segmentation, and planning — so this role has outsized impact on our entire robotics stack.
Responsibilities:
- Design imaging and sensing systems for deployment in warehouse and factory environments — selecting illumination, optics, sensors, compute requirements, and defining imaging geometry to support payload perception and inspection, robot perception, safety, and other operational needs.
- Build and maintain end-to-end imaging simulations of sensor, lens, optical filter, and illumination systems to enable rapid virtual prototyping and design iteration.
- Evaluate emerging sensing technologies, develop vendor relationships, and design benchmarks to fast-track assessment — spanning industrial cameras, event cameras, but also 3D imaging technologies (like ToF and FMCW LiDAR).
- Design and execute structured experiments — to validate simulation predictions against real-world measurements, characterize imaging system performance, and systematically evaluate trade-offs in illumination, optics, sensor configurations, and compute.
- Provide technical leadership on imaging system architecture decisions — authoring system specifications and design documentation, mentoring engineers, establishing best practices, and shaping the long-term sensing roadmap.
Ideal Candidates
- 5+ years of directly relevant experience in camera systems, imaging, or optical engineering (BS required; MS or PhD preferred).
- Hands-on experience designing imaging systems end-to-end — selecting and integrating illumination, optics, optical filters, sensors, compute, with deep understanding of the underlying physics: light-material interactions, sensor response, polarization, spectral filtering, and imaging geometry.
- Track record of building end-to-end imaging simulations and validating them against real-world measurements — modeling parts of (or) the full chain from illumination and optics to bits, using various methods, focusing on various Physics, and to various end uses (e.g. , system characteristics like dynamic range, noise, MTF, distortion etc) and designing experiments to verify predictions.
- Strong experimental methodology — you design controlled experiments, measure results quantitatively, and iterate systematically rather than relying on guesswork.
- Strong software skills (Python or similar language preferred) — for building experiment automation tools, collecting and analyzing data, integrating camera SDKs, and bringing up new sensors.
Nice to have:
- Experience with optical metrology and sensor characterization — measuring MTF, illumination uniformity, spectral response, noise floors, and other parameters needed to validate imaging system performance.
- Familiarity with optical and imaging simulation tools (Zemax, FRED, Isaac Sim, or similar) for system design and virtual prototyping.
- Experience with challenging imaging conditions and understanding of how image quality maps to perception performance — HDR environments, non-Lambertian surfaces, multi-modal sensing, and familiarity with metrics like contrast, SNR, and MTF as they relate to downstream tasks such as detection.
- Experience with depth estimation and 3D reconstruction.
- Experience with camera system integration — understanding data interfaces, bandwidth constraints, latency requirements, and how imaging subsystems integrate into larger robotic platforms.
- Understanding of image signal processing (ISP) pipelines — familiarity with auto white balance, auto exposure, tone mapping, and how ISP tuning affects downstream perception
A Final Note:
If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply — even if you don’t check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we’re lifelong learners committed to getting better every day. We move fast, learn faster, and show up for each other under pressure. The best outcomes come from diverse perspectives working together to build something meaningful and built to last
