About the Job 


The Senior Data Product Engineer role has a significant impact on the organization by ensuring that our data infrastructure is scalable, secure, and aligned with strategic priorities. This role enables reliable access to high-quality data, supports the development of data products, and improves the organization’s ability to make timely, evidence-based decisions. By strengthening our Azure-based platform (Cotton Cloud), the role reduces data silos, enhances operational efficiency, and lays the technical foundation for future use cases. It also fosters collaboration across functions, drives adoption of data tools, and contributes to a stronger, more mature data culture across the organization. 


The Challenge


Looking ahead to 2030, we are targeting reducing GHG emissions from cotton production by half, big cuts in synthetic pesticide use, improve soil health across our network, improve farm income and support women’s empowerment among farmers and farm workers. 


Responsibilities


We are seeking a motivated Senior Data Engineer to join our ITOS Function. In this role, you will be responsible for.

  • Design, Develop, and Maintain Data Infrastructure
    Build and maintain scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines, storage layers, and integrations on Azure. Ensure the platform can support both current reporting needs and future analytical use cases.
  • Technical leadership, Data enablement & Literacy:
    Provide technical direction and establish engineering best practices across the data team. Educate data analysts and other data consumers on data models, definitions, and usage best practices to maximize the value extracted from organizational data
  • Stakeholder Collaboration and Solution Design
    Work closely with data analysts, product teams, and business stakeholders to understand data needs, co-create and refine high-quality datasets that directly power critical business dashboards and analytical tools
  • Consultant collaboration: Act as primary point of contact for external consultants, overseeing project development, ensuring adherence to technical standards, and facilitating timely issue resolution
  • Platform Visibility and Adoption
    Promote internal awareness and usage of Cotton Cloud by supporting onboarding, documentation, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Governance, Quality, and Compliance
    Ensure the platform adheres to data governance standards, including security, privacy, data quality, and access controls.
  • Continuous Improvement and Innovation
    Identify opportunities to improve system performance, adopt new tools, or enhance platform capabilities to meet evolving business needs.


Experience


Education & Experience:

  • A degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • At least 3 years of relevant data engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in ETL, SQL, and a programming language such as Java, C#, or C++.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, GitHub CI/CD, and relational/NoSQL databases.
  • A track record of building and delivering data solutions on Azure.
  • Understanding of BI tools and practices, and ideally experience with Power BI and Salesforce.

1. Advanced Cloud Data Engineering (Azure)

  • Expertise: Deep knowledge of Azure services such as Data Factory, Data Lake, Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL, and monitoring tools.
  • Contribution to Results: Enables the design of scalable, reliable, and secure data pipelines that support operational reporting and advanced analytics.

2. Data Modeling & Pipeline Development

  • Expertise: Proficiency in data modeling (dimensional and normalized), ELT processes, and performance optimization.
  • Contribution to Results: Delivers clean, structured, high-performance datasets that reduce time to insight and improve decision-making quality.

3. Programming and Automation

  • Expertise: Strong skills in SQL, Python or PySpark, and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Bicep).
  • Contribution to Results: Automates data workflows and infrastructure provisioning, improving reliability, reproducibility, and efficiency.

4. Data Governance and Security Awareness

  • Expertise: Understanding of data privacy, security, access control, and compliance principles.
  • Contribution to Results: Ensures platform compliance with governance standards, reducing risk and supporting responsible data use.

5. Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Expertise: Ability to engage with cross-functional teams and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Contribution to Results: Aligns platform development with real-world use cases, increasing data adoption and user satisfaction.

Working arrangements

The position is full-time (40 hours per week) and will be based in Delhi. Better Cotton Initiative offers flexible working, with core hours being 10 am – 4 pm.  The position may require limited international travel.
