Position Overview

The Technical Operations Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, accuracy, and successful execution of payments across Choice Digital’s platform.

This is a hands-on, individual contributor position for someone who is naturally curious, technically resourceful, and enjoys solving complex problems. You'll be responsible for identifying, investigating, and resolving payment failures, troubleshooting technical configurations, and developing solutions that improve payment processing and operational efficiency.

Success in this role requires more than identifying issues and escalating them to Engineering. You'll be expected to independently investigate failures, analyze transaction data, query databases, and write scripts to correct issues and safely reprocess payments. You'll take ownership of technical problems from initial investigation through resolution, while identifying opportunities to prevent similar issues from recurring.

You'll also serve as a key technical liaison between Payment Operations, Account Management, Customer Support, Product, and Engineering, helping translate operational challenges into actionable technical solutions and reducing dependencies on Engineering for routine troubleshooting and payment reprocessing.

This is a full-time, in-office position.

Key Responsibilities

Payment Failure Investigation & Resolution

  • Proactively monitor payment processing activity to identify failed payments, transaction errors, and processing exceptions.
  • Independently investigate payment failures to identify underlying technical, configuration, integration, or data-related issues.
  • Analyze transaction logs, API responses, database records, and system behavior to determine root causes.
  • Write and execute scripts to correct payment issues, retry transactions, and reprocess failed payments using approved tools and procedures.
  • Develop repeatable technical solutions for common payment failures, reducing manual intervention and dependencies on Engineering.
  • Validate payment statuses and confirm successful processing following corrective actions.
  • Identify patterns across recurring failures and recommend permanent solutions.
  • Ensure reprocessing activities include appropriate controls to prevent duplicate payments or unintended transactions.

Technical Troubleshooting & Configuration

  • Investigate and resolve technical configuration issues affecting payment processing and execution.
  • Troubleshoot API integrations, batch files, data transformations, and system-level processing errors.
  • Use SQL, Python, JavaScript, or other scripting languages to investigate issues and develop solutions.
  • Review and validate technical configurations supporting payment methods, client accounts, and transaction workflows.
  • Partner with Engineering when issues require application code changes or broader infrastructure improvements.
  • Support technical testing and validation of fixes, configuration changes, and system enhancements.

Technical Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point for Payment Operations.
  • Own technical support tickets related to payment failures, processing exceptions, and configuration issues.
  • Independently resolve issues when possible rather than defaulting to Engineering escalation.
  • Act as a conduit between Payment Operations, Account Management, Customer Support, Product, and Engineering.
  • Translate operational problems into clear technical findings, requirements, and actionable solutions.
  • Coordinate resolution of complex issues requiring cross-functional support.
  • Document root causes, corrective actions, and repeatable troubleshooting procedures.
  • Prioritize technical issues based on payment impact, client urgency, and operational risk.

Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop scripts and lightweight automation to improve payment monitoring, exception handling, and reprocessing.
  • Identify recurring manual processes that can be automated or simplified.
  • Build tools and queries that improve visibility into transaction failures and processing performance.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering to implement more scalable, long-term solutions.
  • Improve operational controls, technical documentation, and troubleshooting workflows.
  • Contribute to the development of repeatable processes and technical playbooks as the Payment Operations organization scales.

What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in technical operations, application support, systems engineering, payment technology, or a related technical role.
  • Hands-on experience writing and executing scripts using Python, JavaScript, or similar programming languages.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience querying databases to investigate technical issues.
  • Experience troubleshooting APIs, integrations, system logs, and transaction processing workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose technical issues, identify root causes, and implement solutions.
  • Experience managing technical support tickets, incident investigations, and coordinating resolutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a natural curiosity about how systems work.
  • Ability to understand complex technical processes and communicate findings clearly to nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and follow-through, with the ability to manage multiple technical issues and competing priorities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy, particularly when working with financial transactions.

Preferred:

  • Experience in fintech, payment processing, banking, or financial technology.
  • Familiarity with ACH, prepaid cards, checks, and digital disbursement processing.
  • Experience developing scripts or automation to retry, repair, or reprocess failed transactions.
  • Knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, webhooks, SFTP, and batch processing.
  • Experience with transaction reconciliation, payment exception management, and financial data analysis.
  • Familiarity working with Xano.
  • Experience supporting production systems where reliability, accuracy, and timely issue resolution are critical.

Who Will Thrive in This Role

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious, technically resourceful, and relentless about solving problems.

You're the type of person who sees a failed payment and immediately wants to understand why it failed, what happened within the system, and what needs to change to get it processed successfully.

You're comfortable digging into logs, querying databases, inspecting API responses, and writing your own scripts to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

You don't need someone to hand you a step-by-step playbook for every problem. You enjoy figuring things out, testing hypotheses, and building solutions that make the process better the next time.

You understand that resolving a failed payment isn't just about getting a transaction through. It's about understanding the root cause, ensuring the resolution is accurate and controlled, and preventing the same issue from happening again.

Most importantly, you're someone who takes ownership of problems and has the technical ability to solve them.

What we Offer

  • Equity offerings through stock options
  • 401(k) retirement savings match (up to 4%)
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Company paid holidays

In compliance with Colorado state law, pay for this position is anticipated to be between $90,000 and $105,000. Actual offers will be based on the applicant’s skills, experience, and education.

While the anticipated deadline is anticipated to be January 6th, 2027, you are encouraged to submit your application as we may still consider qualified candidates beyond this date.
