
About the role:
The Field PLC Engineer is responsible for developing, testing, programming, and supporting PLC-based control systems for large-scale data center and critical infrastructure environments. This role is hands-on, client-facing, and essential to ensuring precise, reliable, and scalable automation across HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and facility systems.
The Field PLC Engineer works independently on defined engineering assignments while collaborating closely with senior engineers, field teams, commissioning teams, vendors, contractors, and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
PLC Programming & Controls Development
· Develop and modify PLC programs to control HVAC, central plant, mechanical, and electrical systems supporting tightly regulated data center environments.
· Implement customer-requested changes and updates to existing PLC databases, control sequences, and control strategies.
· Configure PLC logic, tags, alarms, I/O structures, and system parameters in accordance with project requirements.
· Support development of reusable code, templates, and standardized programming practices.
· Test PLC logic and validate system functionality prior to field deployment.
Client & Project Support
· Meet with clients to understand mechanical, electrical, and automation requirements for large-scale facility systems.
· Provide technical input during client meetings, design reviews, and project coordination discussions.
· Collaborate with project managers, engineers, contractors, vendors, and field teams to support successful delivery of PLC scope.
· Communicate technical risks, open issues, and project status clearly and proactively.
Field, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
· Support field and commissioning teams during system start-up, troubleshooting, and validation activities.
· Debug installation and programming issues during static and dynamic commissioning of building automation and special systems.
· Diagnose and resolve system errors in PLC logic, hardware, field devices, and communication networks.
· Support integration of PLC systems with SCADA, BMS, EPMS, and other facility systems.
Documentation & Standards
· Document programming workflows, logic changes, system configurations, and commissioning updates for project turnover.
· Follow established PLC programming standards, code review practices, naming conventions, and documentation requirements.
· Maintain organized project files and accurate technical records.
· Participate in internal reviews and lessons learned to improve team execution.
Qualifications:
· 6+ years of PLC programming, controls engineering, industrial automation, or related technical experience.
· Willingness and ability to travel up to 50-60%, including potential for extended site assignment
· Experience or working knowledge of Rockwell / Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 or similar PLC programming platforms.
· Understanding of PLC logic, I/O, field devices, industrial networks, and control system architecture.
· Ability to troubleshoot technical issues in PLC logic, hardware, and communication networks.
· Strong organization, task management, and documentation skills.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative engineering environment.
· Self-directed, proactive, and capable of managing assigned work with appropriate oversight.
· OSHA 10 certification obtained within the past two (2) years is required.
· If certification is not current or has not been completed, OSHA 10 training will be provided and must be successfully completed within the first week of employment.
Preferred
· Bachelor’s degree in Software, Mechanical, Electrical, Automation, or Mechatronics Engineering.
· Experience with HVAC controls, central plants, chillers, boilers, or mechanical systems.
· Exposure to Ignition SCADA, HMIs, Kepware, EPMS, BMS, or facility integration platforms.
· Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, BACnet/IP, or OPC-UA.
· Data center, hyperscale infrastructure, mission-critical facility, or systems integrator experience.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to travel frequently to job sites by car or plane, up to 60%
· Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout job sites for extended periods
· Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and lifts as required
· Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and work in tight or confined spaces
· Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and materials up to 50 pounds
· Manual dexterity to handle tools, wiring, and small components
· Ability to work at heights and in varying indoor and outdoor conditions
· Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment when required (hard hate, vest, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots)
· Visual keenness to read schematics, labels, and digital displays
· Ability to visually identify and differentiate wires by assigned color
· Ability to hear and respond to alarms, equipment sounds, and verbal instructions
· Capability to safely operate hand and power tools
