The Role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Technologist / Designer with real manufacturing experience. This role supports the design, documentation, and improvement of custom trailer products using SolidWorks and practical design-for-manufacturing judgment.

You will work closely with engineering, production, purchasing, quality, and leadership to create designs and drawings that are accurate, buildable, and suited to a high-mix manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and revise 3D models, assemblies, fabrication drawings, and bills of material using SolidWorks.
  • Design and support trailer structures, frames, subframes, suspensions, hitches, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, brake systems, and related components.
  • Prepare clear shop-ready drawing packages for steel fabrication and assembly.
  • Support weight distribution, axle loading, fit-up, and basic structural calculations.
  • Work with production to resolve design questions, fabrication issues, and assembly challenges.
  • Support engineering changes, drawing updates, BOM accuracy, and revision control.
  • Apply practical design-for-manufacturing thinking to improve cost, quality, weight, and build efficiency.
  • Collaborate with sales, purchasing, vendors, and production on customer requirements and product improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full-time mechanical design or engineering technology experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with steel fabrication, weldments, mechanical assemblies, or heavy equipment.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
  • Ability to create clear fabrication and assembly drawings.
  • Practical understanding of welding, cutting, forming, machining, and assembly.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to organize technical information accurately.
  • Comfortable working on-site and spending time with production teams.
  • Good communication skills with shop-floor, engineering, purchasing, and leadership teams.

Academic projects, capstone projects, internships, co-ops, personal builds, or school-based design work do not count toward the required years of full-time industry experience.

Education and Experience

  • Technologist Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years in mechanical design, preferably within manufacturing or related industries.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software, specifically SolidWorks.
  • Experience in trailers, heavy equipment, transportation equipment, oilfield equipment, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, or custom steel fabrication.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, brake, suspension, or electrical trailer systems.
