Brief Summary of Role

Obie is looking for an innovative, bright and hard-working individual to join our underwriting team to help us accomplish our mission of combining insurance know-how and innovative technology to bring bottom line success for the programs in which we manage.

Those successful in this role will have property underwriting experience within P&C insurance. Additionally, you’ll be self-motivated and directed.  An ability to collaborate is a must, but you will be autonomous and expected to succeed without heavy direction.

What you'll Do

  • Facilitate underwriting processes and make risk-based decisions that maintain the profitability and integrity of the book of business
  • Review property inspection reports, photographs, and related documentation to identify hazards, condition concerns, eligibility issues, and discrepancies from information provided during the application process
  • Determine appropriate underwriting action based on inspection findings, including identifying when additional information, remediation, policy changes, cancellation, or non-renewal may be necessary in accordance with underwriting guidelines
  • Document inspection findings and underwriting decisions clearly and consistently within applicable systems
  • Monitor relevant KPIs and book performance within your assigned territory, react to emerging indicators, and recommend solutions when needed
  • Apply underwriting guidelines and use sound judgment when evaluating property risks, escalating risks or exceptions outside of established authority when appropriate
  • Use your underwriting knowledge to identify procedural efficiencies and continually evolve underwriting best practices
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to identify trends or recurring issues found through inspections and other underwriting activity that may impact risk selection, guidelines, or portfolio performance
  • Collaborate with TPAs to help manage and monitor post-loss activity
  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration, positive reinforcement, and accountability to yourself, the team, and the company

What you'll Bring

  • 2+ years of experience in P&C property underwriting
  • Experience reviewing property inspections and using inspection findings to make or recommend underwriting decisions
  • Strong understanding of property risk characteristics, hazards, condition concerns, and their impact on eligibility and underwriting decisions
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess performance and P&L within a book of business
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies across applications, policy information, inspection reports, photographs, and supporting documentation
  • Experience and comfort using a variety of tools, including Excel, Google Workspace, and policy management systems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly document and communicate underwriting decisions
  • Sound judgment and confidence making decisions independently while recognizing when escalation is appropriate
  • Adaptability in a fast-moving, evolving environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities at once
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage time effectively
