Engineering Manager - Landlord Experience

TheGuarantors is a fintech company helping multifamily owners and operators mitigate leasing risk while expanding access for renters. With a deep understanding of owner, operator, and renter needs, we believe renters deserve better access to the home of their choice and operators deserve greater protection and growth opportunities. That’s why we’re leveraging our real estate expertise and using AI-driven renter underwriting to help operators qualify renters faster while mitigating the financial risk of renter default. With $7B+ in lease value protected, we work with 9 of the country’s top 10 operators, are the #1 lease guarantee provider nationwide, and have consistently been named one of Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing companies, one of Forbes’ Best Startup Employers, and one of Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500

The Role

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a distributed team of 4 - 6 engineers building the products landlords and property managers use to work with TheGuarantors.

The Landlord Experience team owns key self-service experiences across the Landlord Portal, including application tracking, renter invitations, lease details, and onboarding, with expanding capabilities in renewals and landlord payments.

This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management. You will guide architecture, review designs and code, and selectively implement solutions to unblock the team. You will multiply the team’s effectiveness through sound technical decisions, better engineering practices, and coaching that helps engineers take greater ownership.

Our stack includes TypeScript, React, Node.js, NestJS, Go, REST and GraphQL APIs, PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS. Experience with several of these technologies is valuable, as is experience modernizing legacy systems or building self-service products.

Location
This is a hybrid role based in NYC

What You’ll Do

  • Own technical direction. Guide architecture across the Landlord Portal, Application Tracker, and renter invitation flows. Balance business needs with scalability, maintainability, and security, while addressing technical debt and modernizing legacy systems.
  • Raise engineering standards. Strengthen code and design reviews, testing, observability, and release practices. Contribute targeted implementations and improve tooling to resolve blockers and make the team more effective.
  • Build a high-performing team. Continuously improve how the team plans, collaborates, and executes to deliver high-quality software predictably and sustainably, from requirements through production support.
  • Lead and develop engineers. Set clear expectations, provide actionable feedback, and support career growth. Encourage constructive technical debate, knowledge sharing, and shared ownership.
  • Turn priorities into results. Partner with Product, Design, and QA to scope and sequence the roadmap, including new renewals and landlord payment capabilities. Align commitments with capacity and identify risks and dependencies early.
  • Own operational reliability. Maintain effective monitoring, runbooks, and follow-the-sun on-call coverage for critical landlord workflows. Lead technical response during major incidents and ensure root causes are addressed.
  • Lead across team boundaries. Coordinate changes to shared applications and services with peer engineering teams. Keep partners and engineering leadership informed of delivery risks, technical tradeoffs, and team health concerns.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including experience leading a team as a Tech Lead, Tech Lead Manager, or Engineering Manager. A strong prior track record as a senior/staff-level fullstack engineer.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to evaluate designs, review code, implement solutions, and troubleshoot production systems, with hands-on experience in fullstack development (TypeScript, React, Node.js, NestJS, and Go preferred).
  • Fluency in API design, data modeling, performance, security, and reliability: schema and API design (REST/GraphQL), PostgreSQL and Redis performance and scaling, and the operational characteristics of production services other teams and customers depend on.
  • Experience delivering customer-facing products across multiple services and team dependencies.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS) and building/operating distributed, service-oriented architectures.
  • A track record of turning ambiguous requirements in a high-growth environment into achievable plans and balancing product priorities with technical investment.
  • Strong coaching, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with comfort leading a distributed team.
