About the role

The Information is looking for a Reporter to own coverage of the most important technology company to emerge in a generation: OpenAI. This is one of the highest-profile beats in journalism today — the company behind ChatGPT sits at the center of the AI revolution and is reshaping business, policy, geopolitics, and daily life. We're looking for someone to make this story theirs.

You don't need a background covering tech to be right for this job. We're looking, first and foremost, for an incredible reporter—someone who knows how to build trust with hard-to-reach sources, break news that moves markets and shapes the public conversation, and turn complexity into narrative. If you've proven you can do that in politics, finance, national security, sports, entertainment, or anything else and you're hungry to go deep on the biggest story in the world right now, we want to talk to you. 

You'll cover OpenAI's leaders, its business, its AI breakthroughs, its new products, its policy fights, and its impact on how the world works and lives. You'll join a collaborative, high-performing newsroom, working alongside our AI reporter Stephanie Palazzolo and partnering with seasoned journalists covering enterprise software, chips, venture capital, and finance, setting the pace for how this industry gets covered. 

The Information has provided readers with extensive coverage of OpenAI, including scoops on upcoming products (e.g. web search and software that controls web browsers); the company’s move away from Microsoft; why executives last year bristled at Sam Altman’s management style; and internal projections about its unprecedented cash burn and revenue. Our team was first to report it was hitting limits with traditional model training, how its reasoning models are impacting the real world, and internal concerns sparked by a new model architecture, loop transformers, that make the AI harder to monitor.

And the story is only getting bigger: OpenAI has undergone a major leadership shake-up as it prepares for a potential IPO, including the departure of senior executive Fidji Simo and a larger operating role for co-founder Greg Brockman. The company is also on track to pursue one of the largest IPOs in history in the coming years. 

This is a rare opportunity for a proven reporter to step onto the biggest stage in journalism, raise their national profile, and define how the world understands the company at the center of the AI era.

Qualifications

• A proven track record of breaking news and building high-level sources who trust you with hard information — on any beat
• Fierce curiosity about power, money, and how institutions really work (a background in tech is a plus, not a requirement)
• The judgment and analytical rigor to make sense of complex, fast-moving stories and tell them clearly
• The drive and discipline to juggle fast-turn scoops alongside ambitious, high-impact investigations 
• Based in, or willing to relocate to, the San Francisco Bay Area. We offer a flexible hybrid model — three days a week in-office — built to support real collaboration

Salary Range: $130,000 - $220,000 USD Annually + Bonus + Benefits
