FLEET MECHANIC

POSITION SUMMARY

The Fleet Mechanic will assist the Capital Projects Director by managing the upkeep and repair of all company vehicles, diesel/gas engines, marine, and heavy equipment at NVE. This position is crucial for maintaining optimal machinery functionality and improving organizational productivity. Primary duties involve diagnosing mechanical problems in diesel/gas, marine, and heavy equipment with advanced diagnostic equipment, performing routine maintenance such as oil changes and inspections, and executing complex repairs, including engine overhauls and system replacements. Safety regulations and industry standards must be followed during repairs. The fleet mechanic will keep records of maintenance and repairs to monitor fleet performance and aid in future budgeting.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on company vehicles
  2. Diagnosing and repairing mechanical issues in diesel engines and related systems
  3. Perform necessary adjustments and replacements of parts as needed
  4. Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed
  5. Collaborate with project teams to ensure vehicle availability and reliability
  6. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies
  7. Other duties as developed and assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

·        This position has no supervisory responsibilities.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of automotive and/or diesel engine systems, including diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance.
  • Understanding of electrical, hydraulic, braking, fuel, and cooling systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools, computerized testing equipment, and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices in mechanical repair environments.
  • Awareness of applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to vehicle emissions, safety, and environmental compliance.

Skills

  • Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Proficient in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex repairs efficiently and accurately.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve mechanical failures.
  • Effective time management to prioritize tasks and meet repair deadlines.

Abilities

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply information from service manuals, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, team members, and customers regarding repair needs and completed work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced repair environment.
  • Ability to adapt to new technology, diagnostic systems, and evolving repair techniques.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of service, inspections, and repairs.
  • Ability to maintain awareness and respect for diverse cultural values and practices in the workplace.




EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance REQUIRED
  • Valid driver license and insurable driving record REQUIRED
  • State of Alaska Commercial Driver License (CDL) PREFERRED
  • High school diploma or equivalent PREFERRED
  • Certification in diesel mechanics or related field PREFERRED
