  • The Native Village of Eyak (NVE) is a federally recognized Tribal government based in Cordova, Alaska—a remote, roadless community nestled between the eastern Chugach Mountains and the waters of Prince William Sound.

As both an Indian Health Service facility and a Community Health Center, Ilanka offers affordable, high-quality care through contract health services and sliding fee scales. In addition to medical services, Ilanka also provides behavioral health support.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Tribal Court Clerk will help drive development of tribal court codes, personnel, programs, and projects – by coordinating with consultants, federal, state and other tribal court officials, tribal attorneys, judges and others as necessary.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1.      Completes all duties and tasks as described in Tribal Judicial Code.

2.      Prioritizes duties, tasks, and responsibilities according to the Tribal Court Strategic Plan and NVE Strategic Plan.

3.      Develop new court services.

4.      Monitor court respondents.

5.      Maintain and develop agreements with outside agencies.

6.      Submit all federal and department reports in a timely manner according to program requirements.

7.      Works cooperatively with the Department of Justice to assure compliance with all regulations.

8.      Write and maintain grants.

9.      Collaborate with Judges and appropriate entities to meet the needs of the Tribal Court.

10.   Work closely with City of Cordova Police for document served and sentenced monitoring.

11.   Receive, track, and process any fees associated with the Court.

12.   Act as secretary to Judges.

13.   Attend, record, and transcribe all Court proceedings using appropriate sound and video equipment.

14.   Maintain court dockets, monitor, and schedule hearings.

15.   Prepare and distribute all case and related materials as appropriate to the State of Alaska and/or the Tribal Court Judges.

16.   Keep confidential records of all Court proceedings, including opening and closing cases.

17.   Assist with all judge-related activities and keep all records related to judges.

18.   Serve as point of contact for Tribal Court appellants, assist with filing paperwork and document retrieval.

19.   Know all policies, decrees, laws and other articles of the Tribe.

20.   Monitor individuals assigned to community work service for the State of Alaska.

21.   Bring compliance violations to appropriate entities attention.

22.   Attend and/or facilitate all mandatory meetings and training.

23.   Maintain confidentiality at all times.

24.   Maintain awareness and sensitivity to Native American Culture.

25.   Perform other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

·        This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

·        Must pass comprehensive background check.

·        Ability to work through complex situations involving emotional trauma of court participants.

·        Must be organized, punctual and maintain a high level of accuracy.

·        Must have ability to prioritize.

·        Demonstrate ability to complete objectives independently. 

·        Strong oral and written communication skills required.

·        Ability to resist pressure from clients, their families, and the community.

·        Ability to and knowledge of scheduling, managing multiple priorities, and meeting deadlines.

·        Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

·        Must have a high records management skill level.

·        Must have knowledge of Alaska Native culture, and/or be culturally sensitive to the customs, traditions, practices, and sovereign status of the Native Village of Eyak.

COMPUTER SKILLS

·        Familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree preferred.

 

Experience: Two years high level administrative office/clerk experience required; court procedure experience preferred. Experience in record management and case management preferred.

 

A combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitute for a degree requirement.

 

Certificates & Licenses: Alaska State driver’s license and insurable driving record; Must obtain Alaska based tribal clerk certification within 18 months of hire.
