The Role
The Manager, Club Fringe Benefits is responsible for League-wide oversight of Salary Cap tracking, management of Player transaction financials, and overall team Salary Cap compliance, as well as the monitoring and reconciliation of Player benefits provided by Teams. This role ensures that all compensation and benefits are accurately reported, properly taxed, and correctly accounted for under the League’s Salary Cap, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and applicable policies. The position serves as a key liaison between Teams, Finance, Payroll, Legal, and Player Affairs to maintain competitive integrity and regulatory compliance across the League.
What You Will Own & Drive
Salary Cap Management & Compliance
- Support the maintenance of League-wide and Team-level Salary Cap usage, including all forms of Player compensation, including salaries, benefits, bonuses, etc., plus all Player transactions, including transfers, loans, etc.
- Review and validate Team submissions to ensure compliance with the CBA, Salary Cap rules, and League policies.
- Identify, analyze, and resolve potential Salary Cap issues, discrepancies, or violations.
- Reconcile Player compensation data across Salary Cap systems, payroll records, and financial reports.
- Produce regular Salary Cap reports, forecasts, and compliance summaries for League leadership.
- Support audits, investigations, and enforcement actions related to Salary Cap compliance.
Player Benefits Tracking & Tax Compliance
- Monitor and track all Team-provided Player benefits, including taxable and non-taxable benefits (e.g., housing, transportation, per diems, relocation, insurance, and other fringe benefits).
- Work closely with Finance, Payroll, and external advisors to determine proper tax classification of Player benefits in coordination with Finance, Payroll, and external tax advisors.
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting of taxable benefits for payroll processing and required tax filings.
- Confirm that benefits are appropriately included or excluded from Salary Cap calculations per League rules.
- Support audits and inquiries related to compensation and benefit taxation.
Cross-Functional & League Support
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on Salary Cap and Player benefits rules for internal stakeholders and Teams.
- Provide guidance and training to Teams on compliance requirements, reporting expectations, and best practices.
- Collaborate with Legal and Player Affairs on interpretation of the CBA and League policies.
- Support League initiatives such as expansion, system implementations, and process improvements related to compensation and benefits tracking.
- Identify opportunities to streamline reporting, improve accuracy, and increase transparency.
What You Will Bring
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Sports Management, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in salary cap management, compensation, payroll, benefits administration, or sports league/team operations.
- Strong understanding of salary cap systems, CBAs, and compensation structures (league or professional sports experience preferred).
- Working knowledge of tax treatment of compensation and benefits.
- Exceptional attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Ability to interpret complex rules and apply them consistently.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Teams and cross-functional partners.
- High level of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential information.
