Safety Specialist

The OBR Cooling Towers Safety Specialist (SS) is responsible for overseeing and enforcing all safety measures on an active construction project. The SS inspects work areas, materials, equipment, and employee work habits to ensure that everything follows OSHA regulatory guidelines and company procedures. This person is responsible for making changes to improve the safety of the workplace. The SS ensures that the Safety Policies created by OBR are followed. This person provides safety expertise and OBR safety program support in areas including employee, client, and facility safety, incident and accident investigations, OSHA regulatory and other licensing compliance.    The Safety Specialist will demonstrate strong leadership skills, ensures that job sites are planned & executed as safely as possible. The SS will assist with executing OBR’s overall risk and safety strategy. The Safety Specialist must work closely with the OBR Safety Manager, Company Leadership, Site Superintendents, Site Formen, project management, and customer EH&S groups to meet or exceed customer expectations. Position may require travel depending on job locations. 

 

ROLES/TASKS OF THE POSITION 

  • Stays up to date on state and federal occupational safety regulations. 
  • Identifies health and safety hazards. 
  • Assist OBR project management and field construction personnel with safe work process, development, and enforcement, including Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Task Hazard Analyses (THA) and Safe Work Procedures as required. 
  • Learn, understand, and enforce OBR safety procedures at jobsites. 
  • Maintain required safety documents/files. 
  • Monitor a program for reporting and investigating “near miss” situations. 
  • Conduct safety audits/inspections of OBR work crews at customer facilities. 
  • Conduct internal safety inspections to identify potential risks and/or hazards. 
  • Work with the Safety Manager and leadership to identify trends and sustainable corrective actions. 
  • Participate in safety investigations and audits, as required by OBR Safety Manager and customer Safety Representatives. 
  • Assist in conducting and organizing on-site safety meetings and working with OBR field leadership to ensure OBR personnel compliance. 
  • Provide professional safety expertise to support OBR employees, subcontractors, and customers through project completion. 
  • Serve as primary point of contact in the admin of risk and safety policies and procedures and programs’ safety needs and concerns. 
  • Assist with executing the organizations overall risks and safety strategy 
  • Willing to continue educational training for the position. 
  • Become familiar with OSHA 29 CFR 1920 and 1926. 
  • Perform other duties as directed. 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

  • High school diploma, or equivalent 
  • Associate's degree in occupational health and safety, Management, and/or a minimum of 1 year of experience in a health and safety role. 
  • OSHA 30-hour construction training  
  • Knowledge of Windows-based applications; must possess good written communication skills 
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid 
  • Blood Borne Pathogens training 
  • Silica Competent Person

  • Ability to travel for extended periods at a time.

PREREQUISITES / REQUIREMENTS 

  • Negative 10 panel urinalysis and breath alcohol test 
  • Valid Driver’s License 
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship 
  • Score of a 2 or less in a DISA background screen
