Position Overview
We are seeking a Controller / Senior Construction Accountant to play a critical role in the next phase of Omari Construction’s growth. This is a key accounting leadership position for someone who can combine technical accounting ability with hands-on construction/project accounting experience.
This role will help lead the accounting function across the business, support day-to-day accounting operations, improve close and reporting processes, and help establish a more scalable foundation for a growing multi-division construction company.
The right candidate will be someone who is comfortable in a company that is evolving and building structure, not simply maintaining an already mature accounting department. This person must be able to operate in an environment where processes are being improved, systems may continue to evolve, and the accounting function is becoming more robust and formalized.
This role is appropriate for either:
- an experienced Controller who can step in and hit the ground running, or
- a strong Senior Accountant / Accounting Manager with solid construction and technical accounting skills who is ready to grow into a Controller role.
Why This Role Matters
This is not just a maintenance accounting role. Omari is building toward a more disciplined finance and accounting function that supports:
- full accrual accounting
- stronger monthly reporting
- project-level financial visibility
- job costing discipline
- revenue recognition and margin analysis
- multiple entities/divisions
- stronger internal controls
- long-term scalability for growth, financing, and strategic opportunities
This role will be central to helping make that happen.
Core Responsibilities
- Help lead the day-to-day accounting function across Omari Construction
- Support accounting across the company’s divisions, including Commercial, Exteriors, and Design & Build
- Assist in strengthening and maintaining a full accrual accounting environment
- Support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process
- Prepare and/or review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Maintain strong balance sheet integrity through timely reconciliations and review
- Support job costing, project accounting, and project profitability analysis
- Assist with WIP-related reporting, cost tracking, and visibility into project performance
- Support revenue recognition, cutoff, matching of expenses to revenue, and related accounting matters
- Assist with overhead allocations, reserves, and other recurring accounting estimates
- Support accounting across multiple divisions and future legal entities, including intercompany activity and consolidated reporting needs
- Help improve accounting processes, documentation, and internal controls
- Work closely with company leadership and the external/fractional CFO on reporting, structure, and finance priorities
- Coordinate with external CPA firms and other advisors as needed
- Support future accounting systems and ERP-related improvements as the company continues to scale
Key Areas of Focus
The ideal candidate should be comfortable working in an environment involving many of the following:
- construction and project-based accounting
- job costing
- subcontractor and vendor accounting
- payroll-related accounting issues
- monthly close discipline
- financial reporting by division
- accruals and reconciliations
- revenue recognition
- intercompany accounting
- multi-entity accounting
- accounting cleanup / transition work
- process improvement and accounting infrastructure buildout
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success would include helping the company achieve:
- more timely and reliable monthly financial reporting
- stronger accrual-based accounting
- better balance sheet reconciliations and support
- improved project-level profitability visibility
- cleaner and more consistent accounting across divisions
- stronger accounting processes and controls
- a more scalable accounting foundation for future growth
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field strongly preferred
- 5+ years of accounting experience, ideally in construction, project-based, or contract accounting
- Strong understanding of GAAP and accrual accounting
- Experience with monthly close, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Experience with job costing, project accounting, and/or WIP-style reporting
- Strong Excel skills
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
- Ability to work independently and bring structure to a growing environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or Senior Construction Accountant
- Experience in commercial construction, residential construction, roofing/exteriors, or design-build
- Experience with multi-division or multi-entity accounting
- Experience with intercompany accounting and consolidated reporting
- Experience with QuickBooks and/or construction-related systems
- Experience helping to clean up books, improve close processes, or support a transition to more formal accrual accounting
- Experience participating in systems improvements or ERP implementation
Who Will Be a Strong Fit
This role is best suited for someone who:
- is both hands-on and technically strong
- can think like an accountant, not just process transactions
- is comfortable in a growing and sometimes ambiguous environment
- enjoys building, improving, and bringing order
- can support leadership with accurate, timely, and decision-useful financial information
- wants to be part of building a stronger finance and accounting function from the ground up
