Job Title: Field Service Engineer- Engineer II
Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly, Eligible for Overtime)
Reports To: Senior Engineer or General Manager
Compensation Range: $75,000 – $85,000 annually
Overtime Eligibility: Yes, in compliance with state and federal laws
Location: This is a field role, with 100% travel expectations. Applications must live near a major airport.
Summary
Engineer II is a mid-level field service role responsible for independently installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining CNC machinery and automation systems. This position provides technical expertise, supports customers in maximizing uptime, and ensures all equipment operates efficiently and safely.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent OpEx and its manufacturing partners in a professional manner, demonstrating reliability, sound judgment, and accountability while onsite and in all customer interactions.
- Independently perform installation, commissioning, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of CNC machine tools and integrated automation systems with limited supervision.
- Analyze equipment performance and diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, servo, and control system faults using systematic troubleshooting methods.
- Perform system start-ups, machine alignments, parameter configuration, and verification of machine accuracy to meet manufacturer specifications and customer production requirements.
- Interpret and apply technical drawings, electrical schematics, ladder logic, and OEM documentation to complete repairs and identify root causes of equipment failures.
- Provide customer instruction on proper machine operation, preventive maintenance practices, and basic troubleshooting procedures to improve reliability and reduce downtime.
- Document all service activity accurately, including service reports, labor hours, parts usage, travel time, and technical findings, in company systems within required timeframes.
- Communicate service status, technical concerns, and project updates to customers, service coordinators, and management in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinate with parts, applications, and technical support teams to ensure efficient resolution of service issues and minimize equipment downtime.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend corrective actions, upgrades, or preventive solutions based on field observations and technical analysis.
- Assist in training and supporting Level 1 Field Service Engineers through field guidance, shared troubleshooting techniques, and adherence to standard service procedures (without formal supervisory authority).
- Follow all company policies, safety procedures, documentation standards, and customer site requirements while performing field service work.
- Maintain and safeguard company-issued equipment, software, and credentials, and properly utilize required reporting and communication systems.
- Travel extensively to customer sites via air and ground transportation and adapt to varying industrial environments and work schedules as required.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years of experience in field service, CNC machinery, or industrial automation.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and industrial network systems (EtherCAT, Ethernet).
- Familiarity with servo motors, I/O modules, PLCs (Allen Bradley preferred), and control logic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and precision technical diagrams.
- Strong customer service and communication skills; comfortable in independent, customer-facing roles.
- Valid driver’s license; ability and willingness to travel extensively (up to 75%+ nationwide, Monday–Friday).
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
- Positive attitude, professionalism, and accountability in all interactions.
Additional Requirements
- Must maintain a clean driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and work safely in industrial environments.
- Comfortable working remotely while maintaining communication with internal teams.
- Flexibility to attend trade shows, customer events, dealer trainings, and work across time zones.
- Occasional overnight or weekend travel may be required.
- Familiarity with CRM or pipeline tools (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot) is a plus.
