Job Title: Senior Field Service Engineer (Engineer III)

Positions Open: Two (2)
Classification: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

While this role includes administrative and coordination responsibilities, the primary duty remains hands-on field service and technical support. Accordingly, the position is classified as non-exempt and eligible for overtime in compliance with state and federal law.
Reports To: General Manager
Compensation: $90,000-$110,000+

Location: Must be based in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Tennessee & must live near a major airport and be open to 100% travel.


Summary

The Senior Field Service Engineer is a leadership-level technical role responsible for advanced installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of CNC-controlled machine tools and automation systems. In addition to providing expert technical support, this role manages and mentors junior engineers, fosters professional development, and actively participates in leadership training to strengthen team performance and organizational growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior technical representative of OpEx and its manufacturing partners, consistently demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and alignment with company standards and values.
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex service issues, providing advanced diagnostics, root cause analysis, and resolution for CNC-controlled machine tools and automation systems.
  • Lead and execute the installation, commissioning, repair, and troubleshooting of advanced CNC machinery and integrated automation equipment in customer environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve highly complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic system issues with minimal oversight.
  • Provide advanced technical guidance to customers regarding equipment operation, preventive maintenance, safety practices, and long-term reliability.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide on-the-job technical training to junior Field Service Engineers, supporting skill development, knowledge transfer, and adherence to established best practices, without formal supervisory authority.
  • Support field operations through administrative and coordination responsibilities, including completing required documentation, submitting expense reimbursements accurately and timely, and assisting with scheduling and workload coordination for junior engineers.
  • Ensure all work is performed in full compliance with OpEx policies, procedures, safety standards, customer requirements, and manufacturer guidelines, recognizing this role operates as a company employee—not an independent contractor.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, internal teams, customers, and external partners regarding service activities, timelines, technical findings, and resolution plans.
  • Interpret, analyze, and effectively communicate technical documentation, including engineering drawings, schematics, and control diagrams.
  • Demonstrate advanced expertise in I/O modules, servo drives and amplifiers, motion control systems, feedback devices, and industrial control architectures.
  • Apply deep working knowledge of electrical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, EtherCAT/Ethernet networking, PLC-based control systems, and industrial electronics.
  • Participate in leadership development, technical training, and continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen individual capability and overall field service performance.
  • Uphold a customer-focused mindset while maintaining high service standards, consistent documentation practices, and professional conduct at all times.

Scope of Authority

  • This position is a company-employed role and is not an independent contractor. The Senior Field Service Engineer – Level 3 is expected to fully comply with all OpEx policies, procedures, codes of conduct, safety requirements, and operational standards.
  • Authority is limited to the execution of assigned technical and field service responsibilities in accordance with established company policies, manufacturer guidelines, and approved work instructions.
  • This role does not have independent authority to deviate from company policies, pricing, contractual terms, customer commitments, travel approvals, safety protocols, or standard operating procedures without prior management approval.
  • The Senior Field Service Engineer – Level 3 may provide technical guidance, mentoring, and on-the-job training to junior engineers but does not have formal supervisory authority, including hiring, termination, disciplinary action, compensation decisions, or performance ratings.
  • All work schedules, customer assignments, travel arrangements, and service priorities are subject to company direction and approval, and must align with operational needs and established processes.
  • The role does not have authority to bind the company to contracts, modify customer agreements, approve non-standard work, or authorize expenses outside of approved policies and limits.
  • Accurate, timely completion of required administrative tasks—including service documentation, expense reports, time reporting, and compliance acknowledgments—is a core expectation of this role.
  • Failure to follow company policies, procedures, safety standards, or reporting requirements may result in corrective action, up to and including termination of employment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, Hydraulics or related field, preferred
  • 8+ years of field service experience with CNC machinery and/or industrial automation.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and coach junior engineers in both technical and professional development.
  • Advanced proficiency with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLCs and related industrial control systems preferred.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to balance technical and leadership responsibilities.
  • Proficient in computer applications for documentation, reporting, and communication.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively as required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and safely work in industrial environments.
  • Flexibility for extensive travel, including occasional overnight or weekend assignments.
  • Comfortable working remotely while maintaining consistent communication with internal teams.
  • Willingness to attend trade shows, customer events, and training sessions as needed.

Tool Requirements for New Hire Engineers

The following tool list has been developed as a guideline to assist new Field Service Engineers in assembling a comprehensive personal tool kit necessary to perform their job effectively and safely while supporting OpEx service standards.

Engineers are responsible for acquiring, maintaining, and transporting their personal tools. Tool brand and quality level are at the discretion of the employee, provided all tools are safe, functional, and appropriate for industrial field service work.

Tool Expectations & Allowance

  • Not every tool listed is required on Day One; however, employees are expected to have a complete and functional tool kit assembled within 90 days of hire.
  • During the initial onboarding period, team members may observe and learn from experienced engineers regarding preferred tools, setups, and best practices.
  • OpEx provides an annual tool allowance intended for replacements, additions, and upgrades to the employee’s personal tool kit.
  • Specialty or job-specific tools required to perform assigned work will be provided by OpEx, subject to prior manager approval.
  • All tools—personal or company-issued—must be maintained in safe working condition and used in accordance with company safety policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

This role operates in a collaborative, fast-paced environment across remote, field, and technical settings. Field service requires frequent travel, independent decision-making, and direct interaction with industrial machinery and customers. All employees are expected to follow safety standards, uphold accountability, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
