Pilot Plant Bioprocess Engineer (Downstream)

About Boston Bioprocess

Boston Bioprocess Inc.’s mission is to help fermentation product companies develop and scale up production. We specialize in providing innovative solutions and services to support the research, development, and manufacturing processes of our clients.

About the role
  • As we continue to grow, we are looking for a highly motivated pilot plant engineer to join our team and develop and execute downstream projects. Our bench scale lab and pilot facility are located in Champaign, IL.
  • A successful candidate will contribute to efforts to help clients optimize their fermentation and purification processes at pilot scale, with the goal of taking clients’ production processes to the level of scalable commercial manufacturing.
  • This role will work closely together with work within the pilot plant team on process development and scaling of downstream processes (i.e. purification processes) for production of proteins, lipids, amino acids, organic acids, polysaccharides, hydrocolloids, and enzymes from bacterial, yeast, and fungal hosts.
  • We are a service business, and client retention and satisfaction are core to our business model. Prospective candidates should understand that success requires technical expertise, but it also involves empathy, prompt communication, and a general client-service orientation.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on experimental planning, process development, troubleshooting, and optimization regarding downstream clarification and purification efforts.
  • Prepare, setup, operate and maintain laboratory and pilot equipment and processes.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to a range of client’s fermentation and DSP processes which includes bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi as the production organism from bench to pilot scale.
  • Create and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Generate and analyze data, prepare technical reports and presentations for communication of results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements in the bioprocessing field, and apply this knowledge to enhance processes and drive innovation.
  • Work collaboratively and safely with cross-functional teams to support ongoing projects.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and contribute to a positive and productive work environment.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in bioprocess engineering, biotechnology or related field with at least 2-3 years of industry experience at pilot scale in process development and scaling.
  • Proficiency in pilot scale bioprocess unit operations like mechanical cell lysis, continuous centrifugation, microfiltration, tangential flow filtration and drying.
  • Proven and excellent problem-solving skills and ability to independently troubleshoot technical issues and to find robust and innovative solutions for process challenges.
  • Experience in manufacturing science and technology, authoring of SOPs and technical transfer documents.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal teams, clients, and external partners.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience working with materials derived from bacterial, yeast and fungal cultures.

The ideal candidate

  • We are a startup! Prospective candidates should enjoy working in a small team with minimal bureaucracy.
  • You’ll enjoy working with us if you are highly motivated and enjoy fast-paced culture and can effectively work together with team members, partners, and clients in a collaborative environment.
