About Outsmart
Outsmart is an early‑stage startup on a mission to reimagine higher education. We are democratizing access to higher education by creating an entirely new collegiate experience. With $38M in backing from firms such as Khosla Ventures, Forerunner, DST Global Partners, and Lightspeed - and a founding team of former Duolingo executives - Outsmart is bringing together mission-oriented, detail-obsessed, high-impact team players to build the learning experiences of tomorrow.
About the Role
The Faculty Lead & Learning Engineer - Math is Outsmart’s designated faculty member for undergraduate mathematics, owning course design, development, and quality across the math portfolio.
You’ll craft an engaging, rigorous, and fun math learning experience for students while setting the standard for math teaching in the AI era. You’ll bring the depth of an academic and the instincts of a builder. That means leveraging AI and modern tooling to design high-quality curriculum, interactive problem sets, and assessments at scale while collaborating closely with learning designers, product, and engineering.
- Location: Los Angeles, CA or Lehi, UT
- Reporting: Works in close partnership with the CEO and university academic leadership.
Qualities We Are Seeking

- Mastery of pedagogy, learning design, and assessment, with an enthusiasm for AI-enabled teaching and learning.
- Builder mindset: resourceful, high energy, accountable, mission-driven, and student-obsessed; thrives in early-stage environments.
- Clear, direct communicator who collaborates well with designers, engineers, and product.
Responsibilities
- Own the math curriculum: Design and develop courses across the math sequence (intro → advanced) with clear learning outcomes and mastery-based progress.
- Design assessments: Create both formative and summative assessments that accurately measure mathematical proficiency.
- Leverage AI & tooling: Create interactive content (e.g., adaptive problem sets or automated feedback loops) that improves engagement and efficacy.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Work with Learning Design, Product, and Engineering to ship high-quality, technology-enabled math experiences such as dynamic visualizations and interactive notebooks.
- Support accreditation & quality: Align syllabi, policies, credit hours, and outcomes with institutional standards; contribute evidence for reviews and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Math Education; PhD or EdD preferred.
