Opportunity@Work is a national nonprofit based in Washington, DC, dedicated to expanding access to career opportunities for workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs)—such as community college, military, training programs, or on-the-job learning.
Opportunity@Work’s Product and Data Analytics team advances a STAR-focused research agenda to both understand how STARs experience the American labor market and to develop actionable, demand-driven insights that unlock more opportunities for STARs to experience economic mobility across various occupations, industries, firm types, and regional contexts. The Data Analysts use data and visualizations to help us tell the story of STARs in the US labor market and encourage action from employers to increase skills-based hiring and remove degree requirements.
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Data Analyst Contractor to support our Analytics team in a contract capacity. This role is an excellent opportunity for a skilled data professional eager to apply their expertise in data analysis, visualization, and research while contributing to a mission-driven organization.
About the role
This is a 1099 contract position with an initial 3-month term, with the possibility of extension up to a total of 6 months. Compensation is a $24,900 flat fee for the initial 3-month engagement.
Generally, your time will be broken out as follows:
- Manage and contribute to data analysis and visualization projects (approx. 75% of time).
- Support narrative and storytelling for client-ready deliverables (approx. 15% of time).
- Collaborate across teams and manage timelines for research initiatives (approx. 10% of time).
What you'll do
Key Projects:
- The primary projects you will complete during this time are:
- Analytics projects to support the private and public sector membership experience
- Analytics projects to support regional workforce development, including skills analyses by role and career pathways
- You will:
- Read in, merge, and manipulate datasets using R, Python, Stata, or similar.
- Conduct exploratory analyses with reproducible, well-documented code.
- Create compelling, replicable data visualizations (ggplot2, seaborn, plotly, Tableau, Excel, etc.).
- Draft client-ready deliverables including datasets, decks, and visualizations.
- Translate quantitative findings into clear, actionable insights.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and maintain project timelines.
Qualifications
- Open to individuals skilled through alternative routes (no degree required)
- Strong experience cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing large datasets.
- Proficiency in R, Python, SQL, SAS, or Stata.
- Demonstrated ability to design impactful visualizations in Tableau, R, Python, or Excel.
- Ability to use data to tell stories that drive decisions.
- Strong time management skills and ability to balance multiple projects.
- Effective communicator with excellent writing and presentation skills.

Contract Details
- Engagement Type: Independent contractor (1099)
- Anticipated Time Commitment: ~150 hours/month
- Term: 3 months, with option to extend to 6 months
- Compensation: $24,900 flat fee for initial 3-month engagement
- Location: Remote (U.S.-based, though Boston or DMV area is a plus for occasional in-person collaboration); contractor must provide their own equipment and insurance
