These few words shape everything we do at Packback from the smallest decision to the largest. Over the last decade since our company’s founding, our team has seen first-hand the power of giving students intentionally designed spaces in their learning experience to be autonomous and curious. We have also seen the incredible benefits of using AI technology to shorten feedback loops and help students revise their work before they submit.
Packback is a pedagogy partner that uses technology as a “means to an end” to shorten feedback loops for students and instructors, improve writing and critical thinking skills, and cultivate student-centered, trust-based educational learning environments.
Packback team members are passionate, mission-driven lifelong learners. Many of us spent time as educators in classrooms and have experienced first hand just how draining the day to day of educating can be. We have seen the gap between the most and least prepared students grow wider every year. The pressure to close that gap has once rested directly on our shoulders, and we understand the enormous cost of addressing that gap, and also not addressing that gap.
Some of us were intrinsically motivated students, the “teacher’s pets” who never want to stop learning. Some of us were the distracted or unmotivated students who wished their instructors would have adopted the pedagogy behind Packback. But all of us share a passionate commitment to our purpose.
Packback is looking for a Full Stack Engineer (Front End) to support our mission to awaken and fuel the lifelong curiosity in every student. As a software engineer at Packback, you will be building features that empower students and professors to have a better learning experience.
Key job duties include communicating well, providing thoughtful feedback to teammates, pairing, actively improving our team knowledge-base, and of course, writing code. You’ll be collaborating with our product team to design and implement new features, tackling bugs and tech debt, and incrementally improving our infrastructure and CI/CD pipeline. While this is a full stack role, we are looking for someone with strong skills and affinity for Front End work. In terms of future career growth, we are looking for someone who is interested in one day pursuing a management/leadership track in their engineering career path.
We’re looking for somebody who is excited to both work on our codebase and pursue engineering management in your future career. To succeed, you need:
3+ years of software engineering experience with web-based products. Transferable experience is more important than years of experience.
Experience in working in an agile environment, mentoring junior engineers, and implementing process improvements
Experience overseeing a project from start to finish and making sure it is successful
Experience includes gathering requirements, designing technical solutions, tracking progress, and ultimately delivering technical projects
High proficiency with frontend web frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) and TypeScript or Javascript. Knowledge of accessibility best practices is a HUGE plus.
Familiarity with software best practices (automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, peer code review, documentation, accessibility)
Experience building products that meet WCAG and section 508 accessibility standards. Ability to apply accessibility best practices across design, development, and testing.
Familiarity with Laravel, Docker, and Kubernetes
Comfort with Linux/UNIX systems
Startup or small company experience
The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $145,000 annually + bonus. We set clear expectations for professional growth and offer an annual learning and development stipend.
