About the role

We are seeking a developer who will work across the full stack on a portfolio of high-traffic web platforms. The responsibilities of this role encompass end-to-end feature development, performance investigation such as identifying bottlenecks adding hundreds of milliseconds to critical pages, building and maintaining pipelines, and executing infrastructure changes in production environments.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely curious about the entire system — someone who derives satisfaction from making it faster, more intelligent, and more reliable across every layer of the stack.

Roles & Responsibilities: 

• Build and ship features across frontend and backend — from database to UI.
• Write clean, tested, production-ready code. 
• Work with TypeScript, React (or similar), and whatever backend stack fits the job.
• Optimise for real-world performance: load times, Core Web Vitals, rendering strategies.
• Design and build REST APIs that other systems and frontends depend on.
• Work with relational databases — write queries, design schemas, think about indexes.
• Integrate third-party APIs and manage the edge cases that come with them.
• Think about reliability from day one: error handling, retries, logging, alerting.
• Deploy and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS (or GCP/Azure) 
• Work with Docker and CI/CD pipelines. 
• Write Infrastructure-as-Code. Automate the boring parts.
• Build pipelines that feed dashboards, reporting.
• Use AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) as a force multiplier.
• Experiment with LLM integrations where they add genuine value to our platforms.
• Work with analysts and the wider team to turn raw data into things that drive decisions.

Requirements:

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline — or a demonstrable self-taught background supported by a strong body of work.
• Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, Linux
• Evidence of independent technical initiative beyond formal education — whether through side projects, open source contributions, hackathons, or personal tools that demonstrate sustained engagement with software development.
• The ability to navigate an unfamiliar codebase and make meaningful contributions within a short period of time, without requiring extended onboarding before becoming productive.
• A structured and methodical approach to debugging — forming hypotheses, testing systematically, and drawing conclusions from evidence rather than making arbitrary changes in the hope of a resolution.
• The self-awareness to recognise knowledge gaps and the drive to address them proactively, without requiring external direction to do so.
• Strong written English communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical ideas clearly and concisely in an asynchronous working environment.

Desirable Attributes

• Personal or independent projects that are actively deployed and serving real users, demonstrating the ability to take work from concept through to production.
• Open source contributions or publicly accessible code that can be reviewed as part of the application process.
• A background in competitive programming or a record of strong performance in hackathons or technical competitions.
• Independent experience deploying and managing applications within a cloud environment, undertaken on personal initiative rather than as part of a formal assignment.
• Practical experience integrating large language model APIs into a project, with considered judgement applied to evaluating where AI assistance added genuine value and where it did not.
