Position Summary
The CNC Machine Programmer is responsible for preparing, programming, and optimizing CNC and automated fabrication equipment to ensure the accurate and efficient production of structural steel components. This role utilizes advanced CAD/CAM and nesting software to generate precise machine programs, maximize material utilization, and support high-quality fabrication output.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with a continuous improvement mindset and a commitment to production accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, program, and optimize CNC programs for:
- Plasma plate processors
- Saw/Drill combo beam lines
- Angle and flat-iron processors
- Robotic copers
- Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and job specifications to determine programming requirements.
- Use CAD/CAM and nesting software (Raptor, VACAM, Primecut, SICAM, or similar) to create, modify, and optimize part designs and layouts.
- Ensure machines are programmed with correct tooling, material specifications, and setup data.
- Optimize machine performance and material yield through efficient nesting and sequencing strategies.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure program accuracy and compliance with project specifications.
- Maintain and update machine software libraries, post-processors, and tooling databases.
- Troubleshoot programming errors, machine output issues, and material incompatibilities.
- Maintain accurate records of programs, revisions, and part libraries.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry best practices to improve shop productivity and programming efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of CNC programming experience in structural steel or heavy fabrication environments.
- Proficiency with CAD/CAM software and nesting programs.
- Strong ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings and fabrication details.
- Experience programming plasma, laser, beam line, and drilling equipment.
- Knowledge of steel grades, material thicknesses, and fabrication processes.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with automated beam processing systems such as Raptor & VACAM
- Understanding of fabrication workflows and production scheduling.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.
Physical & Work Environment
- Work performed in an office/shop production environment.
- Frequent collaboration with shop floor personnel.
- May require walking production areas and observing equipment in operation.
