Job Title: Machine Shop Finishing Technician

Job Summary:
The Machine Shop Finishing Technician is responsible for the final processing of parts and components in the machine shop to meet the required specifications, quality standards, and customer expectations. This role involves using various finishing techniques, including grinding, polishing, deburring, and coating, to ensure products are smooth, precise, and ready for delivery or assembly. The technician will also maintain equipment, ensure safety practices are followed, and collaborate with other team members to ensure timely production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Finishing Operations: Perform various finishing tasks on parts and components, including grinding, sanding, polishing, deburring, and buffing, to remove imperfections and achieve the desired surface finish.
- Inspect Materials: Inspect materials and components before, during, and after the finishing process to ensure they meet specifications and quality standards.
- Read Technical Drawings: Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work orders to determine the appropriate finishing processes and equipment needed.
- Surface Preparation: Prepare surfaces for further processes such as coating, painting, or plating by cleaning and preparing materials to remove contaminants.
- Quality Control: Perform quality checks on finished parts, ensuring that all components meet the required tolerances, finishes, and specifications. Use tools like micrometers, calipers, and gauges to verify measurements.
- Maintain Finishing Equipment: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot finishing equipment such as grinders, polishers, sanders, and deburring machines. Ensure that machines are calibrated and in good working condition.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and procedures when working with finishing tools and materials. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Documentation: Maintain records of finished parts, including specifications, work orders, and any issues encountered during the finishing process.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other machine shop staff, such as machinists and quality control inspectors, to ensure the timely and efficient completion of parts.
- Process Improvement: Contribute ideas for process improvements in the finishing area to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and maintain high-quality standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (technical or trade certification is preferred).
- Previous experience in a machine shop or manufacturing environment, specifically with finishing or post-machining processes (minimum 1-2 years).
- Familiarity with a variety of finishing techniques (e.g., grinding, polishing, deburring).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Knowledge of machine shop tools and equipment, such as grinders, sanders, polishers, and deburring machines.
- Strong attention to detail and precision in the finishing process.
- Familiarity with quality control tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.) to verify finished parts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot finishing equipment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification or training in machine shop finishing or related techniques.
- Experience with advanced finishing processes such as abrasive blasting, shot peening, or coatings.
- Knowledge of safety regulations specific to finishing operations and machine shop environments.
- Experience working with a variety of materials, such as metals, plastics, and composites.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing or process improvement techniques.
Working Conditions:
- The role is performed in a machine shop or industrial environment, which may be noisy and involve exposure to dust, heat, and mechanical equipment.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, and dust masks is required.
- May require standing for long periods, lifting heavy parts, and performing repetitive tasks.
- Shift work, overtime, or weekend work may be required to meet production schedules.
The pay range for this role is:
25 - 28 USD per hour (Anaheim, CA)
