About the role

The vehicle porter will dedicate their time to the movement and staging of both Petersen collection vehicles and vehicles on loan as well as supervising other vehicle porters. Some of the duties include assisting with transportation, placement and security of vehicles at off-site events as well as tracking exhibit and event schedules to plan and anticipate future car moves and workloads. The vehicle porter must have an attention to detail, a concern for staff and collection safety, and understand the responsibility of caring for high-value and one-of-a-kind vehicles. The ideal candidate will be flexible and have experience working in a fast-paced environment, be adept at keeping track of multiple projects and have supervisory experience. Depending on exhibit and event schedules some weekends and nights may be required. Regular schedule requires an early hour start.

What you'll do

  • Move and place a variety of vehicles through manual and mechanical means
  • Move an place vehicles on an off of vehicle trailer, carriers, and exhibit platforms
  • Work with curatorial and collection staff to ensure the safety and proper transport of vehicles in and out of the building depending on exhibit and event schedules. This includes keeping track of shipment and arrival dates, ensuring that necessary paperwork is complete before releasing or accepting vehicles. This includes tracking and recording all accessories that arrive or leave with vehicles  
  • Ensure that all vehicle porters notate, and abide by specific instructions from lenders and handles for each vehicle
  • Monitor the condition and safety of vehicles at all times
  • Work cooperatively with curatorial staff, event staff, and outside vendors to track exhibit and event schedules in order to coordinate the efficient moving and placement of vehicles within strict mandated deadlines   
  • Track needed maintenance and cleaning of daily fleet vehicles used by the museum for errands and transportation. Refuel and wash fleet vehicles as needed
  • Utilize protective equipment such as gloves, blanket, and microfiber towels as needed 

Qualifications

  • Experience with the safe transportation and placement of vehicles in a museum, private collection or luxury car dealership
  • Experience ensuring the safety and care of a high-value vehicle collection
  • Familiarity with safe techniques for pushing, pulling, and moving large objects 
  • Detail oriented with the safety of staff and collection being the top priority 
  • Previous supervisory experience a plus
  • Must be a licensed C class driver in the state of California with a clean driving record


Education and Experience:

Minimum Education (or substitute experience) required: 

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

Minimum Experience required:

  • 3-5 years of experience working with vehicle collections

The pay range for this role is:

20 - 20 USD per hour (Petersen Automotive Museum)
